Designed and Built in Utah — About 50 Minutes Away

Our structures are made in Utah — designed, engineered, and CNC-cut at our facility in Payson, about 50 minutes away. Every one of the 7,000+ structures we’ve delivered nationwide since 2008 started as raw timber on that shop floor.

For a Sandy buyer, that means an in-person consultation, timber cut in-state, and real joinery you can drive to before you commit. Sandy is also where our timber cabana won Best in Show at the 2026 Salt Lake Fall Home Show at the Mountain America Expo Center. We’ve built here, too, including the lantern-lit pavilion, two hipped-roof pavilions, one with a fireplace and TV by the pool, and the deck pergola pictured on this page.

It’s also why the U.S. Small Business Administration named us the 2026 SBA Utah District Manufacturing Small Business of the Year.

Designing Timber Structures for Sandy’s Climate & Lifestyle

Sandy runs from roughly 4,400 feet near State Street to more than 5,300 feet at the foothills below Bell Canyon, so conditions change across town. The city doesn’t publish its own snow or wind figures. Under Utah’s building code, cities not listed in the state snow table use the Utah Snow Load Study, which sets ground snow load by address and elevation. Long-term weather records for the nearby Cottonwood Weir station show an average July high of about 92°F and about 93 inches of snow a year, so a structure has to handle both summer sun and heavy winter snow.

Sandy’s accessory structure code keeps detached structures at least 2 feet from side and rear lot lines in the rear yard, 6 feet from the house, and 10 feet from a neighbor’s home. Height tops out at 15 feet in the rear yard on most lots, or 20 feet on R-1-15 and larger lots, and all accessory structures together are limited to 25% of the rear yard, with a size cap based on lot size. The city’s accessory building handout lists pergolas and says structures under 200 square feet don’t need a permit but must still meet setbacks. We work through those requirements with you during design, before a single beam is cut.

Our standard engineering starts at 115 mph. Where the project requires a higher design wind speed, the structure is engineered for that requirement. We also engineer to your lot’s real snow load, soil, and exposure.

Neighborhoods we design for:

Older homes near the historic district

The Sandy Historic District on the National Register covers older blocks between State Street and 700 East around 9000 South, where a structure has to suit an older home and an established lot.

Homes on the east bench

Foothill lots toward Little Cottonwood and Bell Canyon, where the city’s Sensitive Area Overlay can call for an engineer-stamped grading plan and keeps the steepest slopes natural.

Subdivisions with HOA review

Newer neighborhoods with CC&Rs, where an architectural committee may need to approve a pergola or pavilion design before you apply for a city permit.

Sandy was incorporated in 1893, and the Sandy Museum on Center Street shares the town’s history. Dimple Dell Regional Park runs 630 acres through the city with more than 15 miles of trails, and the city calls its Fourth of July celebration its biggest event of the year. A timber structure earns its place here by fitting that history and standing up to real snow, wind, and summer sun. For statewide engineering and climate detail, see our Utah timber structures page.

Custom Pergolas: Best Fit For Sandy

With July highs in the low 90s, a Sandy patio needs shade that actually works. A pergola has to deliver real shade and read as a permanent part of the home, not a mail-order add-on, whether it sits behind an older home near the historic district or on an east-bench lot facing the Wasatch. That’s where custom engineering separates from a catalog cover.

Many aluminum and light-frame pergola kits provide significantly less coverage, while our ShadePrint™ approach measures actual coverage and can reach 80–85%, varying by orientation and time of day. Unlike metal, timber has low thermal conductivity, so it doesn’t heat the skin as quickly in the sun and surfaces stay more comfortable to the touch. Engineered for Sandy’s bench lots and winter snow, the Dovetail Difference® interlocks the timbers without metal brackets or exposed fasteners, with no visible hardware to loosen. Add lighting and power through TimberVolt® — engineered in, not bolted on.

The same craftsmanship scales up: Sandy’s businesses, parks, and event venues use commercial timber pavilions to turn a patio into a year-round, instantly recognizable space.

FAQs About Timber Structures in Sandy, Utah

Usually, yes. Sandy’s building permits page says a permit is required for all construction in the city and lists pergolas under residential accessory buildings. The city’s accessory building handout says structures under 200 square feet don’t need a permit but must still meet setbacks, and calls for engineer-stamped plans on structures over 750 square feet. Covered patios attached to the home use the city’s deck and covered patio permit. We provide engineering documentation and stamped drawings prepared by a licensed engineer where required.

Sandy doesn’t publish one citywide figure. Under Utah’s building code, cities not listed in the state snow table use the Utah Snow Load Study, which sets the ground snow load by address and elevation. Sandy runs from about 4,400 feet to more than 5,300 feet on the east bench, so we engineer each structure to the figure for your lot.

Our standard engineering starts at 115 mph. Where the project requires a higher design wind speed, the structure is engineered for that requirement. Sandy doesn’t publish a citywide wind figure, so we engineer to the requirements for your lot.

Sandy’s accessory structure code calls for detached structures to sit at least 2 feet from side and rear lot lines in the rear yard, 6 feet from the house, 10 feet from a neighbor’s home, and 30 feet from the front property line. On most lots the peak can reach 15 feet in the rear yard, or 20 feet on R-1-15 and larger lots, with 1 extra foot of setback for each foot over 15. East-bench lots in the Sensitive Area Overlay get added site plan review.

Both. Each arrives as a Custom-Engineered Kit with complete instructions and no visible hardware — DIY-friendly, or we coordinate installation.

We build in Utah. Our shop is in Payson, about 50 minutes south of Sandy, so your structure is designed, engineered, and cut in-state, and you’re welcome to visit before you commit.

Our experience with Western Timber Frame was excellent! It started with our sales representative Scott six months ago, who gave us a free pergola estimate and gave us space to think about it. We turned him down at the time, since we had drainage and other landscaping issues to solve before we could install a pergola. He graciously accepted our decision, which made us want to get in touch again when we were ready to install the pergola. Our project manager, David was easy to work with. He coordinated with our other landscapers to install footings in the middle of them redoing the paver patio. He also coordinated with them to find a way to install the posts, such that the wood would stay dry on top of the patio, but also we wouldn't be damaging the paver stones by putting screws in them. He also recommended an electrician who was able to wire our pergola to a nearby outdoor outlet. The installation crew was fast and detailed. They installed the pergola and touched up the paint in four hours! They were happy to have me point out spots to touch up. From when we signed paperwork to full installation and final walkthrough, it only took 4-6 weeks. We love the warranty as well. All-in-all, we had an excellent experience with Western Timber Frame. We are happy with our investment and would highly recommend them.

Western Timber Frame is awesome! Beautiful job on my deck and pergola install. Very detailed oriented, responsive and worked with me on the unanticipated re-deck foundation due to rotting joists from 2007 deck. Also hooked me up with a solid electrician. Would highly recommend to anyone! Shout out to Tyrell and Brian, the two fellas I worked with!

We installed a pergola about 10 years ago. I noticed recently that one of the main boards for a privacy lattice had a big split in it. They offered to come out and check to see what could be done. They decided to replace that board and repair some of the broken lattice slats because there's a lifetime warranty. David and his team were awesome to deal with. They worked well with us to get the pergola back to their standard. David was so nice and so was his team.

We now have not one but two Western Timberframe structures that we LOVE! The first one was built in 2022 and we just held a wedding reception using the 20 x 20 pergola as the reception area for the bride and groom and staging for the first dance. Just this winter, 2024, we added a pergola to our back patio. It complements our large pergola beautifully! From the salesman who first knocked on our door to the creators who helped us realize our dreams, to the construction team, to the team who reached out to do the scheduling, everyone has been great! Dave has been particularly helpful in replacing some faulty pieces(some Trex pieces on the skirting) on our original pergola. A-MAZING! THANKS, DAVE, YOU'RE THE BEST! Our pergolas are beautiful!

We had Western Timber Frames create a pergola for our outdoor kitchen and they did a fabulous job! They showed up on time, cleaned up after themselves, were respectful of our existing plants and trees, and the color matched perfectly to our deck. We had one of our corbels split and they came right out to take care of it. Not only did they replace the one with the split but they replaced ALL four of them to make sure we didn’t have any future problems. We would recommend them to anyone and plan to have them return for another project we have in mind for our yard. Love it!
