Our experience with Western Timber Frame was excellent! It started with our sales representative Scott six months ago, who gave us a free pergola estimate and gave us space to think about it. We turned him down at the time, since we had drainage and other landscaping issues to solve before we could install a pergola. He graciously accepted our decision, which made us want to get in touch again when we were ready to install the pergola.
Our project manager, David, was easy to work with. He coordinated with our other landscapers to install footings in the middle of them redoing the paver patio. He also coordinated with them to find a way to install the posts, such that the wood would stay dry on top of the patio, but also we wouldn’t be damaging the paver stones by putting screws in them. He also recommended an electrician who was able to wire our pergola to a nearby outdoor outlet.
The installation crew was fast and detailed. They installed the pergola and touched up the paint in four hours! They were happy to have me point out spots to touch up.
From when we signed paperwork to full installation and final walkthrough, it only took 4-6 weeks. We love the warranty as well. All-in-all, we had an excellent experience with Western Timber Frame. We are happy with our investment and would highly recommend them.
Western Timber Frame is awesome! Beautiful job on my deck and pergola install. Very detailed oriented, responsive and worked with me on the unanticipated re-deck foundation due to rotting joists from the 2007 deck. Also hooked me up with a solid electrician. From the quality of the product to the support along the way before and after the purchase, it has been fantastic to work with the crew at Western Timber Frame. It assembles as easy as they say it does – 2 of us completed a 12×16 pergola in 5 1/2 hours (including beer breaks). It is an extremely precise and sturdy fit, and the quality of the Douglas fir is very good too. Great product, excellent team, and tremendous support. I wholeheartedly recommend Western Timber Frame.
We had Western Timber Frames create a pergola for our outdoor kitchen and they did a fabulous job! They showed up on time, cleaned up after themselves, were respectful of our existing plants and trees, and the color matched perfectly to our deck. We had one of our corbels split and they came right out to take care of it. Not only did they replace the one with the split but they replaced ALL four of them to make sure we didn’t have any future problems. We would recommend them to anyone and plan to have them return for another project we have in mind for our yard. Love it!

Ours was a custom, attached patio pergola with tiled roof and lighting. Brian listened to us brain storm about our desired outcome. Our patio was not exactly symmetrical and it took Brian a lot longer than anticipated to get all the measurements he needed. But, the architecture plans he drew up for us were spot on. The installation was done quickly and professionally. We couldn’t be more pleased with our new patio. There were a few minor structural concerns we had but Brian and the Western Timber Frame craftsman patched them up straight away. Great work guys!

I worked with Herman Lang from Western Timberframe in 2021 and he helped me design our pergola! It is wonderful. My sons and I were able to assemble it and it went together exactly as planned. We have had it now for 4 years and absolutely love it! It is our favorite place to hang out and enjoy this weather. It is so sturdy wind does not even make it tremble. I would highly recommend them. The wood is top quality and the design is both beautiful and very sturdy. Herman was awesome to work with. They may not be the cheapest but they are the BEST. Well worth my money!!!!

We had a fantastic experience with Western Timber Frame. We got a custom pavilion and pergola. My husband worked closely with Mike Jenson of WTF (lol), explained what we wanted, sent in pictures of where the structure would be installed, and sent in measurements. We got back an amazingly detailed rendering of the structure in place with our home. This was so helpful in making detailed last –minute decisions. The mock up allowed us to really see how our plan looked and make adjustments for things we didn’t anticipate. For example, upon looking at the rendering we realized the peak of the pavilion against the house had an ugly view of our house’s roof. We decided to add planking there to cover that.
We originally opted for home delivery. However, our delivery window was a 4-hour block in the middle of the week. We have friends that would have helped us unload but it was unreasonable to ask them to take time off of work to do so. Instead, my husband and I contacted the shipper and arranged to pick them up at their warehouse. We were able to do this with a trailer in two trips, as there were two pallets.
Our pavilion went up by our pool. My husband spent one weekend prepping the footers (my terminology may be off). The actual build of the pergola and pavilion took 3 weekends, two strong guys, and an unskilled wimpy helper (me). This timeframe included roofing, electrical wiring and lights and fan. Note however that roofing, lighting and the fan were not included.
The instructions for the build were spot on and very easy to read. The dovetail and tongue and groove cuts on all the pieces made putting them together quick. We were very impressed with the quality of everything. All of the measurements were exact. The lumber was of excellent quality. The stain job was well-done and we really appreciated getting extra stains for touch ups.

How is a timber frame pergola engineered?
Our stamped sample timber frame pergola packages use a 115 mph ultimate design wind speed as a calculation input, not a storm survival rating, with ground snow from 30 psf to 50 psf depending on the site and Exposure B. A licensed structural engineer prepares a stamped package for your address from those criteria, and fabrication follows that package. Your address may require different criteria, and your package controls.
How are timber frame pergola posts anchored?
Each timber frame pergola post sits on a quarter-inch aluminum knife plate that runs up inside the post. The plate anchors to concrete with two to four half-inch by nine-and-a-half-inch anchors, and the post is through-bolted to the plate. Your stamped package sets the anchor count and the footing size.
What holds a timber frame pergola down in wind?
Our stamped sample packages check one shared post footing and anchor detail against a single bounding uplift demand of 3,299 pounds, reused across every package rather than calculated per product. Uplift on a timber frame pergola is resisted by the whole connection path: the post, its through-bolts, the knife plate, the anchors, the footing, and the soil beneath it. Your stamped package sets the uplift and the footing design that apply at your address.
Does an open pergola roof catch less wind than a solid one?
Yes. On the open-roof calculation sheets, our engineering states that shade slats reduce wind area by 50% and wind load by 25% compared with a solid roof. Other slat layouts and solid-roof structures are calculated separately, with no open-slat reduction.
