Hyrum Thompson

– Founder, Craftsman, Visionary

Hyrum Thompson is a man shaped by decades of discipline, vision, and deep respect for the art of building. A licensed general contractor with over 45 years in construction, and more than 30 years in timber craftsmanship, architectural design, and manufacturing innovation, Hyrum’s name has become synonymous with quality and vision in the timber industry.

His love for woodworking began early.
At just 14 years old, Hyrum was already building with purpose. He began in fine cabinetry, where every joint required precision and every surface reflected care. That early training sharpened his standards and refined his eye—qualities that continue to guide how he approaches each structure to this day.

In cabinetry, there’s no room for shortcuts. That level of care became the foundation for The Dovetail Difference®—Hyrum’s patented joinery system. It brought the accuracy of a cabinetmaker to the strength of timber framing. Today, it remains a trusted hallmark across the industry.

Innovation followed naturally.
Hyrum went on to design multiple patented systems, including power-post innovations that combine strength and simplicity for the people who use them. At Western Timber Frame®, he continues to guide product design and improvement while mentoring a new generation of craftsmen. These individuals carry forward the same dedication to excellence and care that shaped him.

His perspective deepened through experience.
He often laughs with his friend Laurence about how he once talked him out of adding a pergola to his first home—unaware at the time how powerfully these timbered spaces could shape family life. That changed once he experienced owning one himself.

Then came a moment that shifted everything.
Hyrum faced one of his greatest challenges: waking up partially paralyzed from spinal stenosis.

Healing came slowly, in the quiet.
Recovery gave him time to reflect—sitting outside, soaking in the sun, surrounded by family. It reminded him why he builds. It’s not just about pergolas or pavilions. It’s about creating spaces that soften the pace of life. A place to give thanks, and hold space for the people you love

He still leads by example.
Hyrum has always lived life at full speed. He wakes at 4:30 AM, pushes himself and others to grow, and continues to model what it means to lead with conviction. Today, he guides product innovation and long-term strategy at Western Timber Frame® while mentoring craftspeople who share his passion for thoughtful, enduring design.

To Hyrum, timber is more than material.
It’s a medium of health and heritage,.. The warmth, strength, and natural presence of real wood—used indoors or out—can transform a space and shape how people feel within it. Whether it’s an exposed ceiling beam, a handcrafted timber truss, or a backyard pavilion, his goal is the same: to bring the beauty and wellness of timber into everyday life.

For Hyrum, this work is more than a profession.
It’s personal. He’s seen and experienced firsthand how a well-crafted timber structure—whether it’s a pergola, pavilion, or architectural timber feature—can change lives.

Timber may be what he builds with. But people are who he builds for.
And if you hear a sense of love in these words, it’s because he’s quietly led with it all along.

Laurence Bunker

– Co-Founder, Designer, Innovator

Laurence Bunker’s story isn’t just about woodworking and design—it’s about creating spaces that change lives. By six years old, he was building and selling mini electric guitars, catching the attention of trade show crowds and landing on the cover of the NAMM Show magazine. By 10, he built, designed and improved gold mine security portals, proving his natural ability to see beyond what exists and into what’s possible has defined his life’s work.

But his passion for outdoor spaces is deeply personal. Raised in a trailer park where RVs came and went, outdoor space was rare. His mother, cautious of the constant turnover of strangers, often kept him inside. That experience left a lasting impression and became the foundation for his life’s mission: to create spaces where families can gather, breathe, and belong.

Today, as Co-Founder and President of Western Timber Frame®, Laurence has grown from SEM/SEO strategist to operational leader, overseeing business, finance, HR, and marketing. His leadership has earned the company multiple Best of State awards, Best of Show recognition, and a coveted spot on the Inc. 5000 list. But to him, the greatest recognition comes from the families who say their timber space has brought them closer, created new traditions, helped them heal, and enriched their lives in ways they never imagined.

For Laurence, a home is more than its walls—it’s the space around them that invites us to breathe deeper, live fuller, and stay longer. It’s about giving people a place to slow down, talk more, and grow closer.
