Montana’s Trusted Timber Frame Builders For Custom Outdoor Structures
Western Timber Frame™, based in Payson, Utah since 2008, designs and builds custom timber frame pergolas, pavilions, gazebos, and outdoor living structures for homeowners and businesses across Montana. Every structure is engineered for the state’s Chinook wind exposure and regional snow load, with 7,000+ structures built nationwide, 28 Best of State Awards, and multiple Inc. 5000 honors behind the work.
Designing Timber Structures For Montana’s Climate & Terrain
Chinook winds can produce strong gusts and dramatic temperature changes along Montana’s eastern Rocky Mountain slopes
Montana’s Chinook Country Creates Distinct Wind Conditions
- Chinook winds are warm, dry winds associated with the eastern slopes of Montana’s Rocky Mountains. They can produce large temperature increases and strong winds. In Loma, a Chinook event produced a 103°F temperature increase over January 14–15, 1972, one of Montana’s most notable temperature records.
- Because chinooks are shaped by local terrain, wind exposure can differ significantly from one site to the next even within the same region. That makes properly designed shade and shelter especially important for outdoor spaces exposed to Montana’s changing wind conditions.
Wind engineering of each of our structures gets matched to the specific site’s actual exposure and terrain funneling. Our standard engineering starts at 115 mph. Where the project requires a higher design wind speed, the structure is engineered for that requirement. Shade gets the same site-by-site thinking. Our ShadePrint™ standard targets 80–85% shade coverage, varying by orientation and time of day, so a patio on a chinook-exposed ridge still gets real relief from Montana’s summer sun.
Enforcement doesn’t disappear once you’re off the certified-jurisdiction map
State Building Code Enforcement Extends Beyond Certified Local Jurisdictions
- Montana has a statewide building code, with enforcement handled either by certified local governments or by the state Building Codes Program where local governments do not have certified enforcement programs.
- Certified local governments in Billings, Bozeman, Missoula, and Helena have certified building-code enforcement programs. The State Building Codes Bureau has jurisdiction over all other areas, so building-code enforcement continues outside certified local jurisdictions.
Wherever your property falls — inside a certified city or under the state’s direct oversight — we engineer every structure and prepare the documentation it needs for code review.
A footing spec that works in one Montana city can fall short in the next one over
Frost Depth Requirements Are Set Locally, Not By One Statewide Number
- Montana’s building code does not establish one uniform frost-depth number for every location. Local climatic and geographic design criteria can set the applicable footing depth. For example, Bozeman’s design criteria specify 36 inches for one-story construction and 48 inches for two-story construction.
- A footing poured to one city’s minimum and assumed elsewhere in the state won’t necessarily sit correctly, below that area’s real frost line.
Footings get engineered to the code-required frost depth for the specific jurisdiction, not a number borrowed from somewhere else in the state.
Custom Timber Frame Structures We Build In Montana
Montana demands structures built for wind and snow at once, depending on where they stand. Here’s what we build and why it matters here.
Our Timber Frame Design & Build Process In Montana
01
STEP 1 — Design Consultation
Define your project scope and site conditions
We assess your location, wind exposure, and snow load — whether you start from our Custom-Engineered Kit line or a fully bespoke design.
02
STEP 2 — Site-Specific Engineering
Engineered for Montana’s wind exposure and snow load
Every timber is cut in-house on our own CNC, not sent to a third-party fabricator, so the team that engineers your structure is the team that cuts it — with hand-shaping reserved for the arched beams and knee-brace curves a CNC can’t cut. The patented Dovetail Difference® (U.S. Patent No. 9,797,149 B2) interlocks the timbers without metal brackets or exposed fasteners — in company-commissioned testing, that joint holds roughly five times the strength of standard mechanical fasteners. That structural performance is backed by a limited structural warranty of 5 to 25 years, depending on series.
03
STEP 3 — Fabrication in Payson, Utah
Precision-built and pre-finished
Components are CNC-cut and shop-stained with a pre-applied, UV-rated Sherwin-Williams finish before delivery, so there’s no separate stain bill once it arrives. Most installs take an afternoon to a day thanks to pre-cut joinery.
04
STEP 4 — Delivery & Installation
Delivered statewide with flexible installation options
We coordinate freight delivery across Montana, from Billings and Great Falls to Bozeman, Missoula, and rural ranch properties, and support both contractor and DIY installation.
Note: Montana Permitting Requirements
We account for the site-specific requirements and build around local permitting and factors that can affect your project, including wind and snow load requirements, and can provide stamped drawings prepared by a licensed engineer where the project and jurisdiction require them.
