We were hired by a local client to erect a large pavilion that they had purchased from Western Timber Frame. The package was delivered right on schedule and was well packed and organized. The speed and ease at which these structures can be assembled is amazing, since all of the hard work and guess work is handled ahead of time. The pre-finished timbers, tight joinery and hidden hardware made for a super solid clean finish that is usually very difficult to achieve. Having only built similar structures from rough plans and inconsistent lumber, it sure felt like cheating! The finished product was amazing and we’ve always recommended Western Timber Frame to customers for similar projects since then. Looking forward to the next one!
After deciding we would like a pavilion in our backyard we searched many options and came down to two companies here in the Salt Lake area. Unfortunately I initially went with a competitor to Western timber frame and was very disappointed. This company told me they could easily beat Western Timberframe prices. After the company took my $500 deposit I didn’t hear from them for five weeks even after repeated phone calls text and emails.
I then dropped in to the Western timber frame office in Lehi and met with Brian. What a pleasing difference ! Brian went over every detail throughout the plans right there. He went through every option and made me feel comfortable. Within four weeks A delivery team came to my backyard and in one day erected the 12 X 16 pavilion. We are very pleased with the pavilion! It is quite a structure and we have received all positive comments from my neighbors.
My humble advice to those that do not like the checking and splitting that naturally occurs in beautiful Douglas Fir grade 1 quality wood I would say you need to order a vinyl pavilion. There are many websites that sell vinyl pavilions. But I don’t think you can beat the look and overall feel of a real wood pavilion like Western Timberframe builds.
We had a fantastic experience with Western Timber Frame. We got a custom pavilion and pergola. My husband worked closely with Mike Jenson of WTF (lol), explained what we wanted, sent in pictures of where the structure would be installed, and sent in measurements. We got back an amazingly detailed rendering of the structure in place with our home. This was so helpful in making detailed last –minute decisions. The mock up allowed us to really see how our plan looked and make adjustments for things we didn’t anticipate. For example, upon looking at the rendering we realized the peak of the pavilion against the house had an ugly view of our house’s roof. We decided to add planking there to cover that.
We originally opted for home delivery. However, our delivery window was a 4-hour block in the middle of the week. We have friends that would have helped us unload but it was unreasonable to ask them to take time off of work to do so. Instead, my husband and I contacted the shipper and arranged to pick up at their warehouse. We were able to do this with a trailer in two trips, as there were two pallets.
Our pavilion went up by our pool. My husband spent one weekend prepping the footers (my terminology may be off). The actual build of the pergola and pavilion took 3 weekends, two strong guys, and an unskilled wimpy helper (me). This timeframe included roofing, electrical wiring and lights and fan. Note however that roofing, lighting and the fan were not included.
The instructions for the build were spot on and very easy to read. The dovetail and tongue and groove cuts on all the pieces made putting them together quick. We were very impressed with the quality of everything. All of the measurements were exact. The lumber was excellent quality. The stain job was well-done and we really appreciated getting extra stain for touch ups.
I ran into Darren from Western Timber Frame at the home show. I had been looking to have something done in my back yard and he showed me some amazing options, went over the pro’s and con’s of each including pricing. It was clear if you want quality and durability this the was the place to go. I settled on a redwood pavilion however I had no place to put it. my entire yard was grass and the concrete around the house was deteriorating. He introduced me to a concrete company that did great work for a decent price. I ended up putting a few pads in and repairing all the concrete around my house. The extra work cost me more than I had budgeted but the result was a beautiful yard that I am looking forward to enjoying with family and friends.
You can see in the picture that the only thing I have left is to finish the electrical and put in a new yard.

After researching locally for a contractor to build our outdoor pavilion with kitchen and fireplace we found Western Timber Frames. Locally everything is built out of cedar. Having plenty of experience with cedar, douglass fir really appealed to me. Cedar life expectancy down here is about 10 years. Western Timber Frames has a 25 year warranty. Due to the size of the investment and the uncertainty of who I was buying from, My wife and I flew up to Salt Lake from Houston. We met with Brian once we arrived. A super fantastic gentleman who’s very accommodating and laid back. Brian took us around on a Saturday when they were closed and showed us actual finished products. He also gave us a tour of the plant and explained the manufacturing process. We were impressed and made the decision while we were visiting. They are legit. They are quality. Our product, we couldn’t be happier. If I had a complaint, it would be that Brian told us it would take us 2 weeks to build, It took two old men and two young strong guys 2 DAYS!!!! It went together SOLID and without any modifications!!! Awesome engineering!!
We put up one of their pavilions in our backyard in 2020 and we couldn’t be happier! We contacted local companies to build us a custom one and when we told them we wanted to hang swings on the beams, they said “No way!” Our Western Timber designer said, “you could hang a car on our beams” and they weren’t lying! Best in class! We had an issue with our back wall, because we were the first to purchase one for that size pavilion, but they made it right!
We recently had Western Timber install a pavilion on our patio and from start to finish they did an amazing job. They were so good to work with. We were being helped by Chase and he helped us get everything figured out. He was very helpful. The crew that installed it were professional and finished in a timely matter. We are very happy with our pavilion and will look forward to enjoying it for many years to come.

Western Timber Frame built a pavilion over our deck during our home renovation. This Pavilion has transformed our backyard and changed the kitchen and living room feel. Chase did a great job building the CAD drawing to see what the finished product would look like. Everything went perfectly, and we now enjoy a part of our home that we never did before.

We did quite a bit of research before pulling the trigger, and we are VERY satisfied with our decision to go with Western Timberframe.
Yes, it is pricey. Yes, it is worth it. Chase Bronson was extremely helpful through the design process and was able to share our vision through a handful of phone calls and emailed site photos.
Was I a bit anxious plunking down this kind of cash for something being shipped from 1,500 miles away? Sure I was. But studying their manufacturing processes, I had confidence to move ahead.
Shipping was great. They sent me a photo of the loaded trailer, communicated weights and I was able to prepare to unload the minute he arrived.
I ended up building the pavilion by myself with a manual forklift and a scissor lift. The kit fit perfectly together, and was easy to square. The timbers are precisely cut, notched, and the provided hardware was spot on. I especially appreciated the predrilling of all connections.
I highly recommend these folks. The pictures speak for themselves. This pavilion will give us years of enjoyment.

We absolutely love our new 16×30 pavilion. Used for shade in our hot Texas summer and the many pool parties we love to have with friends and family. It was a big project but was built mostly in two days with just two guys working on it. Mike Jenson was professional and very helpful from beginning to end. How is a timber frame pavilion engineered?
Our stamped sample timber frame pavilion packages use a 115 mph ultimate design wind speed as a calculation input, not a storm survival rating, with ground snow from 30 psf to 50 psf depending on the site and Exposure B. A licensed structural engineer prepares a stamped package for your address from those criteria, and fabrication follows that package. Your address may require different criteria, and your package controls.
How are timber frame pavilion posts anchored?
Each timber frame pavilion post sits on a quarter-inch aluminum knife plate that runs up inside the post. The plate anchors to concrete with two to four half-inch by nine-and-a-half-inch anchors, and the post is through-bolted to the plate. Your stamped package sets the anchor count and the footing size.
What holds a timber frame pavilion down in wind?
Our stamped sample packages check one shared post footing and anchor detail against a single bounding uplift demand of 3,299 pounds, reused across every package rather than calculated per product. Uplift on a timber frame pavilion is resisted by the whole connection path: the post, its through-bolts, the knife plate, the anchors, the footing, and the soil beneath it. Your stamped package sets the uplift and the footing design that apply at your address.
What does a solid pavilion roof change?
A solid roof takes the full wind and snow load with no open-slat reduction, so beams and rafters are sized up. Our stamped pavilion packages use 10 in. × 10 in. posts. Your stamped package sets the member sizes for your footprint.
