Washington’s Trusted Timber Frame Builders For Custom Outdoor Structures
Western Timber Frame™, based in Payson, Utah since 2008, designs and builds custom timber frame pergolas, pavilions, gazebos, and outdoor living structures for homeowners and businesses across Washington. Every structure is engineered for the state’s regional snow load and coastal wind exposure, with 7,000+ structures built nationwide, 28 Best of State Awards, and multiple Inc. 5000 honors behind the work.
Designing Timber Structures For Washington’s Climate & Terrain
Washington isn’t one climate any more than it’s one hazard. The Cascades split the state into a wet, mild westside and a dry, sun-intense eastside, and site-specific engineering has to account for both snow load and wind exposure at every elevation.
A roof spec built for Seattle is nowhere close to enough at Snoqualmie Pass
Washington’s Snow Load and Eastside Sun Split
- Puget Sound lowland communities carry ground snow loads commonly in the 15 to 25 psf range, with a 25 psf minimum roof snow load recommended for the region, while Cascade elevations climb into a different category entirely — Snoqualmie Pass Ski Area (3,000 ft) has a recommended ground snow load of 433 psf, and Paradise on Mount Rainier (5,440 ft) has 600 psf. A roof engineered for Puget Sound conditions may be inadequate at Cascade elevations where substantially higher snow loads apply. That’s a load calculation problem, not a materials problem. Roof pitch and beam sizing get engineered to the actual elevation-based load at the specific site, not a blended statewide average.
- Moving east across the Cascades into the Columbia Basin or Yakima and Walla Walla valleys, heavy winter snow gives way to a dry, high-sun environment where managing intense summer heat and UV radiation is just as critical as handling seasonal precipitation. Managing this climate requires structural shade solutions tailored to open, sun-baked properties rather than just standard snow-load engineering.
Roof pitch and structural framing get engineered to match the specific site’s snow or weather demands. ShadePrint™ is available for structures where sun exposure, not just moisture or snow, is the primary concern—particularly useful in eastern Washington’s sun-intense climates where stronger sun exposure and less cloud cover make shade essential. Coverage runs 80-85%, varying by orientation, time of day, and time of year.
Washington’s worst wind events hit the exposed coast, not the interior
Near the Coast, We Recommend Coast Redwood
- It might seem like Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge wind rules would carry across the river, but the Special Wind Region that applies on the Oregon side of the Gorge has never existed in the Washington State Building Code. Exposure here gets handled through standard site-specific engineering, not a blanket regional wind adder. The real wind risk sits on the exposed coast. The January 29, 1921 Olympic Blowdown brought sustained winds of 113 mph and gusts to 150 mph at North Head, felling more than 40% of trees on the Olympic Peninsula’s southwest slopes and causing an extraordinary loss of timber. The October 12, 1962 Columbus Day Storm, the most damaging windstorm in the region in 150 years, brought gusts of 113 mph to Bellingham. Interior Puget Sound consistently sees notably weaker winds than the exposed coastal headlands during these events.
- Every Western Timber Frame structure uses the same EarthAnchor™ hardware and shop-applied Sherwin-Williams stain system regardless of region — coastal builds get a different species recommendation, not different hardware. Our standard engineering starts at 115 mph. Where the project requires a higher design wind speed, the structure is engineered for that requirement.
For Washington’s coastal properties, we recommend Coast Redwood for its natural resistance to moisture and decay.
Wind-blown soil hundreds of feet deep on one side of the state, glacial till on the other
Washington’s Soil Isn’t One Soil — Puget Lowland Till and Palouse Loess Behave Differently
- Tokul soil, recognized by the Washington Society of Professional Soil Scientists as the state’s representative soil, formed from volcanic ash and wind-blown sediment over dense glacial till, and covers more than a million acres of Puget lowland forest and Cascade foothills. Move east across the Cascades and the geology changes entirely — the Palouse region’s loess soil is wind-deposited sediment that can reach more than 150 feet thick in places.
- A footing specification suited to one soil type may not be appropriate statewide, which is why bearing and drainage design should be matched to the soil conditions at the specific site.
The result is a foundation approach built around the actual conditions of the property, not a one-size-fits-all Washington specification.
Seattle’s minimum wouldn’t clear Spokane’s frost line
Frost Depth Varies Significantly Across Washington
- Seattle’s residential code sets exterior footings at a minimum of 12 inches below undisturbed grade, while Spokane’s joint frost-depth policy requires 24 inches below finished grade — double the westside minimum.
- A footing poured to Seattle’s minimum may not extend deep enough to meet the local frost-depth requirement on the eastside.
EarthAnchor™ footings get engineered to the code-required frost depth for the specific jurisdiction, not a number borrowed from the other side of the state.
Custom Timber Frame Structures We Build in Washington
Washington demands structures built for wet coastal winters, mountain snowpack, and coastal wind at once. Here’s what we build and why it matters here.
Our Timber Frame Design & Build Process in Washington
01
STEP 1 — Design Consultation
Define your project scope and site conditions
We assess your location, regional snow load, and site-specific wind exposure — whether you start from our Custom-Engineered Kit line or a fully bespoke design.
02
STEP 2 — Site-Specific Engineering
Engineered for Washington’s snow load and wind exposure
Every timber is cut in-house on our own CNC, not sent to a third-party fabricator, so the team that engineers your structure is the team that cuts it — with hand-shaping reserved for the arched beams and knee-brace curves a CNC can’t cut. Our patented Dovetail Difference® interlocks the timbers without metal brackets or exposed fasteners, creating a strong structural connection designed for demanding conditions. Every Western Timber Frame structure carries a limited structural warranty. Length runs from 3 years on Deck Structures to 25 years on the 12K Series, based on the series you purchase.
03
STEP 3 — Fabrication in Payson, Utah
Precision-built and pre-finished
Components are CNC-cut and shop-stained with a pre-applied, UV-rated Sherwin-Williams finish before delivery, so there’s no separate stain bill once it arrives. Most installs take an afternoon to a day thanks to pre-cut joinery.
04
STEP 4 — Delivery & Installation
Delivered statewide with flexible installation options
We coordinate freight delivery across Washington, from Puget Sound communities to Spokane and the Columbia Basin, and support both contractor and DIY installation. Freight is included in the lower 48, and pricing is identical in-state and out-of-state.
Note: Washington Permitting Requirements
Washington’s state building code applies to all counties and cities under state law, with local jurisdictions handling permitting and enforcement — amendments can exceed the state minimum but can never fall below it. We build around local permitting, including Spokane’s requirements for frost depth and snow load. We provide engineering documentation to support permitting and can provide stamped drawings prepared by a licensed engineer where the project and jurisdiction require them.
