Custom Outdoor Timber Frame Builders in Canyons Village, Utah

Canyons Village began as a small ski area. Vail Resorts’ history of the mountain says Park City West opened on December 20, 1968; it later became Wolf Mountain, and in 1997 American Skiing Company renamed it The Canyons. Today the village sits at about 6,800 feet at the base of Park City Mountain, about four miles from Main Street, with homes and condos spread across the slopes of the Snyderville Basin.

Western Timber Frame™ designs, engineers, and builds custom timber frame pergolas, pavilions, and outdoor living structures across Canyons Village, Utah. Every structure is engineered to the specific lot: its soil, its grade, its snow and wind load, and the way you use the space.

Designed and Built in Utah — Delivered to Canyons Village

Our structures are made in Utah — designed, engineered, and CNC-cut at our facility in Payson, about an hour and a half south. Every one of the 7,000+ structures we’ve delivered nationwide since 2008 started as raw timber on that shop floor.

For a Canyons Village buyer, that means timber cut in-state, a design team you can call or visit, and a Custom-Engineered Kit delivered to your lot. We’ve built across Park City and the Wasatch Back, including the projects pictured on this page.

It’s also why the U.S. Small Business Administration named us the 2026 SBA Utah District Manufacturing Small Business of the Year.

Designing Timber Structures for Canyons Village’s Climate & Lifestyle

Canyons Village sits at about 6,800 feet, where snow shapes every design. NOAA’s 1991–2020 normals for the Snyderville station, about a mile and a half from the village, show about 153 inches of snow a year, and the Park City station averages a July high of about 80°F. Summit County’s design criteria list a 36-inch frost depth, 115 mph wind, and seismic design category D or D1, and set ground snow load from the Utah snow load map, which works by address and elevation. A structure here has to carry deep, heavy snow and still give real shade on clear summer afternoons.

Canyons Village is in unincorporated Summit County, in the Snyderville Basin, so building permits go through the Summit County Building Department rather than Park City. The county exempts residential accessory buildings under 200 square feet from a building permit; larger structures need one. The village is also served by the Canyons Village Management Association, a master association formed in 1999 that oversees development and design in the village, so check with your HOA before you apply. We work through those requirements with you during design, before a single beam is cut.

Our standard engineering starts at 115 mph. Where the project requires a higher design wind speed, the structure is engineered for that requirement. We also engineer to your lot’s real snow load, soil, and exposure.

Neighborhoods we design for:

Slopeside homes and condos

Homes and condos close to the lifts, where a structure has to carry heavy snow and fit HOA design standards.

The Snyderville Basin

Neighborhoods around Kimball Junction, Jeremy Ranch, and Summit Park, where open views and wind shape the roof and footing design.

Subdivisions with HOA review

Newer neighborhoods with CC&Rs, where an architectural committee may need to approve a pergola or pavilion design before you apply for a city permit.

Canyons is part of Park City Mountain. The Quicksilver Gondola, completed in late 2015, joined Canyons to the Park City side and formed the largest lift-served ski area in the U.S., with more than 7,300 acres. The village’s Cabriolet lift was installed in 2000, the Utah Olympic Park built for the 2002 Winter Games is a short drive away, and the Swaner Preserve near Kimball Junction has grown to more than 1,000 acres. A timber structure earns its place here by fitting that mountain setting and standing up to real snow. For statewide engineering and climate detail, see our Utah timber structures page.

Custom Pergolas: Best Fit For Canyons Village

With July highs near 80°F and strong sun at nearly 7,000 feet, a Canyons Village patio or deck needs shade that actually works. A pergola has to deliver real shade and read as a permanent part of the home, not a mail-order add-on, whether it sits beside a slopeside condo or a home in the basin. That’s where custom engineering separates from a catalog cover.

Large Douglas Fir timber pergola in Early American stain over a dining patio and lavender garden, with mountains behind.

Many aluminum and light-frame pergola kits provide significantly less coverage, while our ShadePrint™ approach measures actual coverage and can reach 80–85%, varying by orientation and time of day. Unlike metal, timber has low thermal conductivity, so it doesn’t heat the skin as quickly in the sun and surfaces stay more comfortable to the touch. Engineered for Canyons Village’s mountain sun and heavy snow, the Dovetail Difference® interlocks the timbers without metal brackets or exposed fasteners, with no visible hardware to loosen. Add lighting and power through TimberVolt® — engineered in, not bolted on.

The same craftsmanship scales up: Canyons Village’s businesses, parks, and event venues use commercial timber pavilions to turn a patio into a year-round, instantly recognizable space.

For most pergolas and pavilions, yes. Canyons Village is in unincorporated Summit County, and the county Building Department exempts only residential accessory buildings under 200 square feet. Larger structures need a building permit, and your HOA or the Canyons Village Management Association may also review the design. We provide engineering documentation and stamped drawings prepared by a licensed engineer where required.

A lot. NOAA records about 153 inches of snow a year at the Snyderville station near the village. Summit County sets ground snow load from the Utah snow load map, by address and elevation, so we engineer each structure to the figure for your lot.

Our standard engineering starts at 115 mph. Where the project requires a higher design wind speed, the structure is engineered for that requirement. Summit County’s design criteria list 115 mph, and we engineer to the requirements for your lot.

Summit County’s Building Department handles building permits for structures 200 square feet and larger. Many homes in the village are also part of an HOA under the Canyons Village Management Association, which oversees design in the village, so check your HOA’s rules before you build.

Both. Each arrives as a Custom-Engineered Kit with complete instructions and no visible hardware — DIY-friendly, or we coordinate installation.

Our experience with Western Timber Frame was excellent! It started with our sales representative Scott six months ago, who gave us a free pergola estimate and gave us space to think about it. We turned him down at the time, since we had drainage and other landscaping issues to solve before we could install a pergola. He graciously accepted our decision, which made us want to get in touch again when we were ready to install the pergola. Our project manager, David was easy to work with. He coordinated with our other landscapers to install footings in the middle of them redoing the paver patio. He also coordinated with them to find a way to install the posts, such that the wood would stay dry on top of the patio, but also we wouldn't be damaging the paver stones by putting screws in them. He also recommended an electrician who was able to wire our pergola to a nearby outdoor outlet. The installation crew was fast and detailed. They installed the pergola and touched up the paint in four hours! They were happy to have me point out spots to touch up. From when we signed paperwork to full installation and final walkthrough, it only took 4-6 weeks. We love the warranty as well. All-in-all, we had an excellent experience with Western Timber Frame. We are happy with our investment and would highly recommend them.

Western Timber Frame is awesome! Beautiful job on my deck and pergola install. Very detailed oriented, responsive and worked with me on the unanticipated re-deck foundation due to rotting joists from 2007 deck. Also hooked me up with a solid electrician. Would highly recommend to anyone! Shout out to Tyrell and Brian, the two fellas I worked with!

We installed a pergola about 10 years ago. I noticed recently that one of the main boards for a privacy lattice had a big split in it. They offered to come out and check to see what could be done. They decided to replace that board and repair some of the broken lattice slats because there's a lifetime warranty. David and his team were awesome to deal with. They worked well with us to get the pergola back to their standard. David was so nice and so was his team.

We now have not one but two Western Timberframe structures that we LOVE! The first one was built in 2022 and we just held a wedding reception using the 20 x 20 pergola as the reception area for the bride and groom and staging for the first dance. Just this winter, 2024, we added a pergola to our back patio. It complements our large pergola beautifully! From the salesman who first knocked on our door to the creators who helped us realize our dreams, to the construction team, to the team who reached out to do the scheduling, everyone has been great! Dave has been particularly helpful in replacing some faulty pieces(some Trex pieces on the skirting) on our original pergola. A-MAZING! THANKS, DAVE, YOU'RE THE BEST! Our pergolas are beautiful!

We had Western Timber Frames create a pergola for our outdoor kitchen and they did a fabulous job! They showed up on time, cleaned up after themselves, were respectful of our existing plants and trees, and the color matched perfectly to our deck. We had one of our corbels split and they came right out to take care of it. Not only did they replace the one with the split but they replaced ALL four of them to make sure we didn’t have any future problems. We would recommend them to anyone and plan to have them return for another project we have in mind for our yard. Love it!
