Custom Outdoor Timber Frame Builders on the East Bench, Salt Lake City

The East Bench sits on the bench of the Salt Lake Valley at the base of the Wasatch foothills, the easternmost community in Salt Lake City. The city’s East Bench Master Plan describes older, distinctive homes in the western part of the community and newer homes of contemporary design on the slopes of the eastern foothills, with neighborhoods that include Yalecrest, Wasatch Hollow, Bonneville Hills, Foothill/Sunnyside, and Sunnyside East.

Western Timber Frame™ designs, engineers, and builds custom timber frame pergolas, pavilions, and outdoor living structures across the East Bench in Salt Lake City. Every structure is engineered to the specific lot: its soil, its grade, its snow and wind load, and the way you use the space.

Designed and Built in Utah — Delivered to the East Bench

Our structures are made in Utah — designed, engineered, and CNC-cut at our facility in Payson, about an hour away. Every one of the 7,000+ structures we’ve delivered nationwide since 2008 started as raw timber on that shop floor.

For an East Bench buyer, that means an in-person consultation, timber cut in-state, and real joinery you can drive to before you commit. We’ve built across the Salt Lake Valley, including the arched-beam pergola in Salt Lake City pictured on this page, and projects in Salt Lake City, Millcreek, and Cottonwood Heights.

It’s also why the U.S. Small Business Administration named us the 2026 SBA Utah District Manufacturing Small Business of the Year.

Designing Timber Structures for the East Bench’s Climate & Lifestyle

The East Bench climbs from the valley toward the foothills, so most lots sit well above the valley floor. Salt Lake City Building Services’ design criteria list a 115 mph residential wind speed, a 30-inch frost depth, and a minimum 28 psf ground snow load at or below 4,239 feet, with higher sites set by the Utah Snow Load Study. NOAA’s 1991–2020 climate normals for Salt Lake City International Airport show an average July high of 94°F and about 52 inches of snow a year.

Building Services exempts sheds, playhouses, and similar residential structures under 200 square feet from a building permit, but zoning rules still apply. The city’s accessory building guide allows detached structures in most single-family zones up to 17 feet with a pitched roof (12 feet flat), and 15 feet pitched in the Yalecrest overlay. In local historic districts such as Westmoreland Place and parts of Yalecrest, a Certificate of Appropriateness is always required for exterior work. We work through those requirements with you during design, before a single beam is cut.

Our standard engineering starts at 115 mph. Where the project requires a higher design wind speed, the structure is engineered for that requirement. We also engineer to your lot’s real snow load, soil, and exposure.

Neighborhoods we design for:

Period homes in Yalecrest and Wasatch Hollow

Bungalows and period revival homes from the early 1900s through the 1950s, where a structure has to fit the home’s style and, in a historic district, pass review.

Foothill homes with valley views

Larger lots on curving streets up the slope, where grade, valley views, and a higher snow load figure shape the footing and roof design.

Mid-century homes in Bonneville Hills

Established mid-century homes with mature trees and uniform setbacks, where a pergola or pavilion adds shade without crowding the yard.

The East Bench is home to some of the state’s best-known destinations, including Red Butte Garden, Hogle Zoo, This Is the Place Heritage Park, and the Natural History Museum of Utah. The master plan notes that Red Butte Creek and Emigration Creek both flow through the area, and residents have direct access to the foothill trail system. A timber structure earns its place here by fitting established neighborhoods and standing up to real snow, wind, and sun.

Custom Pergolas: Best Fit For the East Bench

With July highs averaging about 94°F, an East Bench patio needs shade that actually works. A pergola has to deliver real shade and read as a permanent part of the home, not a mail-order add-on, whether it sits behind a period home in Yalecrest or on a foothill lot with valley views. That’s where custom engineering separates from a catalog cover.

Classical pergola with round columns and a hanging lantern on a raised stone patio, framing a red brick home across the lawn.

Many aluminum and light-frame pergola kits provide significantly less coverage, while our ShadePrint™ approach measures actual coverage and can reach 80–85%, varying by orientation and time of day. Unlike metal, timber has low thermal conductivity, so it doesn’t heat the skin as quickly in the sun and surfaces stay more comfortable to the touch. Engineered for the East Bench’s summer sun and winter snow, the Dovetail Difference® interlocks the timbers without metal brackets or exposed fasteners, with no visible hardware to loosen. Add lighting and power through TimberVolt® — engineered in, not bolted on.

The same craftsmanship scales up: Salt Lake City’s businesses, schools, and event venues use commercial timber pavilions to turn a patio into a year-round, instantly recognizable space.

FAQs About Timber Structures on the East Bench, Salt Lake City

It depends on the structure. Salt Lake City Building Services exempts sheds, playhouses, and similar residential structures under 200 square feet from a building permit, but zoning rules still apply. In a local historic district, such as Westmoreland Place or parts of Yalecrest, exterior work always needs a Certificate of Appropriateness. We provide engineering documentation and stamped drawings prepared by a licensed engineer where required.

Salt Lake City’s design criteria set a minimum ground snow load of 28 pounds per square foot at or below 4,239 feet. The East Bench sits higher, so lots there use the Utah Snow Load Study, and we engineer each structure to the figure for your address.

Our standard engineering starts at 115 mph. Where the project requires a higher design wind speed, the structure is engineered for that requirement. Salt Lake City’s design criteria list 115 mph for residential projects, and we engineer to the requirements for your lot.

In most single-family zones, Salt Lake City’s accessory building guide allows a detached structure up to 17 feet with a pitched roof or 12 feet with a flat roof. In the Yalecrest overlay, the limit is 15 feet pitched and 12 feet flat. It also has to sit at least 1 foot from side and rear lot lines and 4 feet from the house. We design to your zone and lot from the start.

Both. Each arrives as a Custom-Engineered Kit with complete instructions and no visible hardware — DIY-friendly, or we coordinate installation.

We build in Utah. Our shop is in Payson, about an hour from the East Bench. Your structure is designed, engineered, and cut there, then delivered as a Custom-Engineered Kit, and you’re welcome to visit the shop before you commit.

Our experience with Western Timber Frame was excellent! It started with our sales representative Scott six months ago, who gave us a free pergola estimate and gave us space to think about it. We turned him down at the time, since we had drainage and other landscaping issues to solve before we could install a pergola. He graciously accepted our decision, which made us want to get in touch again when we were ready to install the pergola. Our project manager, David was easy to work with. He coordinated with our other landscapers to install footings in the middle of them redoing the paver patio. He also coordinated with them to find a way to install the posts, such that the wood would stay dry on top of the patio, but also we wouldn't be damaging the paver stones by putting screws in them. He also recommended an electrician who was able to wire our pergola to a nearby outdoor outlet. The installation crew was fast and detailed. They installed the pergola and touched up the paint in four hours! They were happy to have me point out spots to touch up. From when we signed paperwork to full installation and final walkthrough, it only took 4-6 weeks. We love the warranty as well. All-in-all, we had an excellent experience with Western Timber Frame. We are happy with our investment and would highly recommend them.

Western Timber Frame is awesome! Beautiful job on my deck and pergola install. Very detailed oriented, responsive and worked with me on the unanticipated re-deck foundation due to rotting joists from 2007 deck. Also hooked me up with a solid electrician. Would highly recommend to anyone! Shout out to Tyrell and Brian, the two fellas I worked with!

We installed a pergola about 10 years ago. I noticed recently that one of the main boards for a privacy lattice had a big split in it. They offered to come out and check to see what could be done. They decided to replace that board and repair some of the broken lattice slats because there's a lifetime warranty. David and his team were awesome to deal with. They worked well with us to get the pergola back to their standard. David was so nice and so was his team.

We now have not one but two Western Timberframe structures that we LOVE! The first one was built in 2022 and we just held a wedding reception using the 20 x 20 pergola as the reception area for the bride and groom and staging for the first dance. Just this winter, 2024, we added a pergola to our back patio. It complements our large pergola beautifully! From the salesman who first knocked on our door to the creators who helped us realize our dreams, to the construction team, to the team who reached out to do the scheduling, everyone has been great! Dave has been particularly helpful in replacing some faulty pieces(some Trex pieces on the skirting) on our original pergola. A-MAZING! THANKS, DAVE, YOU'RE THE BEST! Our pergolas are beautiful!

We had Western Timber Frames create a pergola for our outdoor kitchen and they did a fabulous job! They showed up on time, cleaned up after themselves, were respectful of our existing plants and trees, and the color matched perfectly to our deck. We had one of our corbels split and they came right out to take care of it. Not only did they replace the one with the split but they replaced ALL four of them to make sure we didn’t have any future problems. We would recommend them to anyone and plan to have them return for another project we have in mind for our yard. Love it!
