Custom Outdoor Timber Frame Builders in the Avenues, Salt Lake City

The Avenues climbs the foothills just north of downtown Salt Lake City. The city calls it the most significant neighborhood in Utah for documenting residential architecture from the late 1860s onward, with more than one hundred architect-designed homes in styles from Queen Anne to Prairie. The original blocks were laid out with four lots each, and owners split many of them over time, which is why lot sizes and home styles change from one house to the next.

Western Timber Frame™ designs, engineers, and builds custom timber frame pergolas, pavilions, and outdoor living structures across the Avenues in Salt Lake City. Every structure is engineered to the specific lot: its soil, its grade, its snow and wind load, and the way you use the space.

Designed and Built in Utah — Delivered to the Avenues

Our structures are made in Utah — designed, engineered, and CNC-cut at our facility in Payson, about an hour away. Every one of the 7,000+ structures we’ve delivered nationwide since 2008 started as raw timber on that shop floor.

For an Avenues buyer, that means an in-person consultation, timber cut in-state, and real joinery you can drive to before you commit. We’ve built across the Salt Lake Valley, including the cabana suite, the timber awning, and the arched-beam pergola pictured on this page, and projects in Salt Lake City, Millcreek, and South Salt Lake.

It’s also why the U.S. Small Business Administration named us the 2026 SBA Utah District Manufacturing Small Business of the Year.

Designing Timber Structures for the Avenues’ Climate & Lifestyle

The Avenues rises from South Temple into the Wasatch foothills, so many lots sit above the valley floor. Salt Lake City Building Services’ design criteria list a 115 mph residential wind speed, a 30-inch frost depth, and a minimum 28 psf ground snow load at or below 4,239 feet, with higher sites set by the Utah Snow Load Study. NOAA’s 1991–2020 climate normals for Salt Lake City International Airport show an average July high of 94°F and about 52 inches of snow a year.

Building Services exempts sheds, playhouses, and similar residential structures under 200 square feet from a building permit, but zoning rules still apply. In the Avenues local historic district, the city says a Certificate of Appropriateness is always required for exterior work. Many Avenues lots are zoned SR-1A, where the city’s accessory building guide caps a detached structure at 14 feet with a pitched roof (9 feet flat) and a 480-square-foot footprint. We work through those requirements with you during design, before a single beam is cut.

Our standard engineering starts at 115 mph. Where the project requires a higher design wind speed, the structure is engineered for that requirement. We also engineer to your lot’s real snow load, soil, and exposure.

Neighborhoods we design for:

Historic homes in the lower Avenues

Homes from the late 1800s and early 1900s, where a new structure needs historic review and has to fit the home’s style, brick, and rooflines.

Foothill lots in the upper Avenues

Sloped lots higher on the bench, where grade, valley views, and a higher snow load figure shape the footing and roof design.

Narrow lots and tight backyards

Split lots with small rear yards, where an attached cover, an entry cover, or a compact pergola fits the setbacks and still gives real shade.

The Avenues sits beside some of Salt Lake City’s best-loved outdoor spaces. Memory Grove was dedicated as a memorial park in 1924 at the mouth of City Creek Canyon, and the neighborhood’s landmarks include the Madeleine Choir School and the Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church. A timber structure earns its place here by fitting that history and standing up to real snow, wind, and sun.

Custom Pergolas: Best Fit For the Avenues

With July highs averaging about 94°F, an Avenues patio needs shade that actually works. A pergola has to deliver real shade and read as a permanent part of a historic home, not a mail-order add-on, whether it sits behind a Victorian on a narrow lot or on a foothill yard with valley views. That’s where custom engineering separates from a catalog cover.

Painted timber pergola with round columns, a slatted roof, and a hanging lantern over a stone patio among fall trees in Holladay, Utah.

Many aluminum and light-frame pergola kits provide significantly less coverage, while our ShadePrint™ approach measures actual coverage and can reach 80–85%, varying by orientation and time of day. Unlike metal, timber has low thermal conductivity, so it doesn’t heat the skin as quickly in the sun and surfaces stay more comfortable to the touch. Engineered for the Avenues’ summer sun and winter snow, the Dovetail Difference® interlocks the timbers without metal brackets or exposed fasteners, with no visible hardware to loosen. Add lighting and power through TimberVolt® — engineered in, not bolted on.

The same craftsmanship scales up: Salt Lake City’s businesses, schools, and event venues use commercial timber pavilions to turn a patio into a year-round, instantly recognizable space.

FAQs About Timber Structures in the Avenues, Salt Lake City

It depends on the structure. Salt Lake City Building Services exempts sheds, playhouses, and similar residential structures under 200 square feet from a building permit, but zoning rules still apply. In the Avenues local historic district, exterior work always needs a Certificate of Appropriateness. We provide engineering documentation and stamped drawings prepared by a licensed engineer where required.

Salt Lake City’s design criteria set a minimum ground snow load of 28 pounds per square foot at or below 4,239 feet. Higher lots in the Avenues foothills use the Utah Snow Load Study, so we engineer each structure to the figure for your address.

Our standard engineering starts at 115 mph. Where the project requires a higher design wind speed, the structure is engineered for that requirement. Salt Lake City’s design criteria list 115 mph for residential projects, and we engineer to the requirements for your lot.

In the SR-1A zone common in the Avenues, Salt Lake City’s accessory building guide allows a detached structure up to 14 feet with a pitched roof or 9 feet with a flat roof, and a footprint up to 480 square feet, with another 120 square feet for a second structure. It also has to sit at least 1 foot from side and rear lot lines and 4 feet from the house. We design to your zone and lot from the start.

Both. Each arrives as a Custom-Engineered Kit with complete instructions and no visible hardware — DIY-friendly, or we coordinate installation.

We build in Utah. Our shop is in Payson, about an hour from the Avenues. Your structure is designed, engineered, and cut there, then delivered as a Custom-Engineered Kit, and you’re welcome to visit the shop before you commit.

Our experience with Western Timber Frame was excellent! It started with our sales representative Scott six months ago, who gave us a free pergola estimate and gave us space to think about it. We turned him down at the time, since we had drainage and other landscaping issues to solve before we could install a pergola. He graciously accepted our decision, which made us want to get in touch again when we were ready to install the pergola. Our project manager, David was easy to work with. He coordinated with our other landscapers to install footings in the middle of them redoing the paver patio. He also coordinated with them to find a way to install the posts, such that the wood would stay dry on top of the patio, but also we wouldn't be damaging the paver stones by putting screws in them. He also recommended an electrician who was able to wire our pergola to a nearby outdoor outlet. The installation crew was fast and detailed. They installed the pergola and touched up the paint in four hours! They were happy to have me point out spots to touch up. From when we signed paperwork to full installation and final walkthrough, it only took 4-6 weeks. We love the warranty as well. All-in-all, we had an excellent experience with Western Timber Frame. We are happy with our investment and would highly recommend them.

Western Timber Frame is awesome! Beautiful job on my deck and pergola install. Very detailed oriented, responsive and worked with me on the unanticipated re-deck foundation due to rotting joists from 2007 deck. Also hooked me up with a solid electrician. Would highly recommend to anyone! Shout out to Tyrell and Brian, the two fellas I worked with!

We installed a pergola about 10 years ago. I noticed recently that one of the main boards for a privacy lattice had a big split in it. They offered to come out and check to see what could be done. They decided to replace that board and repair some of the broken lattice slats because there's a lifetime warranty. David and his team were awesome to deal with. They worked well with us to get the pergola back to their standard. David was so nice and so was his team.

We now have not one but two Western Timberframe structures that we LOVE! The first one was built in 2022 and we just held a wedding reception using the 20 x 20 pergola as the reception area for the bride and groom and staging for the first dance. Just this winter, 2024, we added a pergola to our back patio. It complements our large pergola beautifully! From the salesman who first knocked on our door to the creators who helped us realize our dreams, to the construction team, to the team who reached out to do the scheduling, everyone has been great! Dave has been particularly helpful in replacing some faulty pieces(some Trex pieces on the skirting) on our original pergola. A-MAZING! THANKS, DAVE, YOU'RE THE BEST! Our pergolas are beautiful!

We had Western Timber Frames create a pergola for our outdoor kitchen and they did a fabulous job! They showed up on time, cleaned up after themselves, were respectful of our existing plants and trees, and the color matched perfectly to our deck. We had one of our corbels split and they came right out to take care of it. Not only did they replace the one with the split but they replaced ALL four of them to make sure we didn’t have any future problems. We would recommend them to anyone and plan to have them return for another project we have in mind for our yard. Love it!
