When Privacy Becomes the Missing Piece in Outdoor Design
There’s something freeing about open-air living—until openness starts to feel exposed.
This family loved their outdoor space but needed a way to make it more private. Their patio opened directly toward the street and driveway, leaving them without the quiet or seclusion they hoped for. Whether walking to the porch or sitting outside to relax, they wanted a space that felt enclosed, intentional, and personal.
The Challenge
The area wasn’t large, but it was visible from multiple directions. Any new structure needed to create privacy without feeling boxed in. It also needed to complement the home’s traditional architecture and tie in naturally with existing brick and rooflines.
Functionally, it had to stand independently—freestanding rather than attached—yet look like it belonged there all along.
Before: No Defined Outdoor Boundary

The Solution
Our design team crafted a 7′ x 30′6″ timber frame structure, built from Douglas fir in a Rich Cordoba stain. The lattice-panel walls bring layered privacy—screening sightlines while still allowing air and light to move freely through the space.
Before: Uncovered Walkway

After: A Cozy Timber Frame Passageway

The structure features a Classic beam profile, arched knee braces, and a Traditional roofline, supported by our signature Axis step beam. Every joint is secured with The Dovetail Difference®, our proprietary interlocking system that gives the frame exceptional strength and longevity. It’s a method trusted for both residential and commercial-grade builds, proven to stay true through time and weather.
After: A Freestanding Timber Frame Pergola Adds Privacy and Peace

Before: Just a Walkway

After: Elegant Covered Walkway with Lattice Privacy Panels

The Experience Now
What was once a pass-through space is now a destination. The family often lingers here after dinner, gathered beneath the timber canopy with the breeze moving through the lattice. It’s become their favorite place to unwind—private, peaceful, and beautifully connected to the rhythm of home.

Even small improvements like this can completely change how an outdoor area is used. Privacy isn’t just about separation; it’s about belonging—creating a space that feels yours, and only yours.
Designed to Endure
From the structural integrity of The Dovetail Difference® to the finish of the 6000 Series Rich Cordoba stain, this build was designed to last as long as the memories made beneath it. And while this project was for a residence, the same timber engineering principles apply in commercial environments—from courtyards to entryways—where privacy and design meet to create more human, more livable spaces.
