What the series numbers mean

The name of each series is the post size. A 6,000 Series structure stands on 6×6 timbers; a 12,000 Series stands on 12×12 timbers. The posts are squared — the same measurement front to back as side to side — so a 10×10 is a true ten inches each way. Height isn’t fixed to the series: our standard gives about 8 feet of headroom underneath, and taller is an option when you want more airflow or a more dramatic feel.

These are also full-dimension timbers, not the shrunken lumber sold at a home-improvement store. A Western Timber Frame 6×6 is an actual 6 inches; a home-center 6×6 is milled down to about 5.5 inches. That extra mass — in Douglas Fir, Coast Redwood, or Cedar — is part of why our kits weigh what they do. What changes as you move up the series is the mass of the timber and how much it can carry. A 12×12 post has four times the cross-section of a 6×6, so it spans farther, shoulders more snow, and stands up to stronger wind — and it reads as a much heavier, more substantial frame.

These four are our standard series — a starting point, not a ceiling.

Building bigger than 12×12: we’ve gone well past 12×12 — plenty of 14×14 structures, and some as large as 16×16 and even 18×18. Timbers that big carry a bit of character with them. Past about 12×12 they can no longer be milled “free of heart,” so the center of the tree sits inside the timber — what’s called “boxed heart” — and it checks, meaning it develops surface cracks, a little more as it seasons. That’s a natural trait of massive timber, not a weakness, and it doesn’t affect the structure’s strength. On the very largest builds we plan for it, sometimes running through-bolts up a post that can be tightened over time to keep the frame drawn tight as the wood settles.

How to choose your post size

Here’s the part that takes the pressure off: you don’t have to work out which post is strong enough. That’s our job. Every structure is fully engineered to your local building code — wherever you are in the country, and whatever your area has to stand up to — so any size you choose is built to last.

A large footprint doesn’t automatically mean larger posts — on a wider structure we can add posts to keep each span short, so the timbers stay the same. Our standard is about 8 feet of headroom underneath — comfortable room to walk, hang string lights, or add a fan or heater. But height isn’t fixed to the series; we tune it to your situation. For shade, we look at your location and how the sun crosses your space, so the roof sits where it actually blocks the sun instead of letting it slip in underneath. Roof style matters too — a cabana’s single-slope roof sits higher in front and lower in back — and a structure set over a doorway or entry is sized to that spot. Yes. Each series comes with a standard set of timbers — posts, beams, rafters, and braces sized to work together — but because every structure is fully custom, you’re not locked to that spec. Clients often start with one series and go heavier on just the posts: a 6,000 Series with 8×8 posts, or an 8,000 Series with 10×10 posts, for example. Most builds keep one post size throughout for a consistent look, and your design team confirms that whatever you choose still meets the engineering for your span and loads.

Yes — that’s our TimberVolt® system. It runs outlets, USB ports, light switches, even a TV hookup, hidden right inside the timber — no trenching, no exposed conduit, no visible wiring. Because it routes through the post, TimberVolt works in any post 6×6 or larger — 6×6, 8×8, 10×10, or 12×12. The 1.25-inch channel for the wiring doesn’t take away from the post’s strength, and we can run power up a post as tall as about 16 feet, so you don’t have to size up just to get power. If you want it, mention it to your design team early and they’ll build it into the right post.

On raw strength, an 8×8 carries more than a 6×6 — bigger cross-section, more capacity. But which is right for you usually comes down to look and scale, because every structure is engineered for where it’s going: on most builds both hold up beautifully, so it’s a style choice. There’s also a craftsmanship reason a design moves up to an 8×8: a 6×6 is plenty strong for the everyday vertical load, but the beams get wider as the structure grows, and where four beams lock into the top of a post, those dovetail joints need room — past a certain beam size a 6×6 top simply runs out of room for the joinery, so the bigger beam, not the weight, is what calls for the bigger post. The other exception is an extreme-load location — heavy snow or high-wind country — where the engineering may set a minimum size for your area, and your design team will tell you up front if that applies. Either way, you’re never guessing at strength — we handle that — you’re choosing the look that fits your space.
