Post-Installation Stain Touch-Ups: What Homeowners Should Know

What to Expect After Your Timber Frame Structure Is Installed
Investing in a handcrafted timber frame structure is more than a delivery—it’s a process. From the first design conversation to the final brushstroke, Western Timber Frame is committed to making sure your outdoor structure meets your functional needs, reflects your aesthetic vision, and stands strong for generations.
This guide walks you through the final stage of completion: stain touch-up, so you know exactly what to expect and can finish your project with confidence.
Your Project, Led by a Dedicated Design Manager

Every Western Timber Frame project is guided by a Design Manager who oversees the process from start to finish. Their role is to ensure your structure is:
- Designed around how you actually live and gather outdoors
- Visually cohesive with your home or commercial setting
- Structurally sound and engineered for longevity
- Aligned with your budget and timeline
You’re never navigating the process alone. In addition to your Design Manager, our support team is available throughout the build and installation process to answer questions and provide guidance.
Understanding the Final Step: Stain Touch-Up
Once your arbor, cabana, gazebo, pavilion, pergola, ramada, or trellis is installed, the final step to completion is minor stain touch-up.
This is a normal and expected part of working with real, solid timbers—and it’s designed to be simple.
Why Touch-Up Is Needed
Before shipping, every timber frame kit is:
- Precision cut
- Pre-drilled
- Pre-stained
- Test-fit for accuracy
During transport, the finished timbers are stacked on thinner wood spacers to protect them in transit. Because these beams are oversized and heavy, the spacers can occasionally adhere slightly to the surface during shipping. When removed, this may leave small areas of exposed wood.
These areas are purely cosmetic and are easily corrected with a few brush strokes.

How Much Time Should Touch-Up Take?
Whether your structure is simple or complex, the touch-up process is designed to be quick and straightforward.
- Most projects require no more than 4 man-hours of touch-up work
- The stain provided with your kit is more than sufficient to complete the process
- No specialized tools are required
If touch-up requires significantly more time or stain than provided, we consider that outside of normal expectations and want to know about it.
Special Notes on Multi-Tone and Light or Dark Stains
Some finishes naturally require a little extra attention:

- Two-tone stain systems
Tongue-and-groove components are easiest to touch up before installation, allowing for clean, even coverage.

- White finishes
White timbers receive an additional coat, which can increase the likelihood of minor touch-up. For this reason, we include extra stain with white structures.

- Black or very dark finishes
Tongue-and-groove components are easiest to touch up before installation, allowing for clean, even coverage.
Built With Care — Finished With Confidence
Every timber frame structure will require some level of final stain touch-up. This is not a flaw—it’s part of working with authentic materials and handcrafted construction.
The important thing is this:
You will have everything you need to complete the process easily, and our team is here to support you if questions arise.
