How Do You Attach a Pergola to a Brick House Without Damage?

To attach a pergola to brick safely, anchor the ledger into the framing behind the wall — never the brick veneer — with fasteners landed on the studs or rim joist, usually 16 or 24 inches on-center, and flashing installed before the ledger goes up. The International Residential Code (IRC R507.9.1.1) prohibits supporting a ledger on masonry or brick veneer, because veneer is built to carry only its own weight. Get that connection wrong and the wall — not the pergola — fails first.

The ledger attaches to the framing behind the wall — studs, band joist, or rim joist — never to the brick, whether that brick is veneer or solid masonry.

Nearly all brick homes built in the last few decades with brick are veneer over wood framing — a single wythe, non-structural, hung on ties with a drainage gap visible as weep holes near the foundation. Solid masonry is rarer. Either way, the ledger’s job is to reach the framing, not stop at the face.

How to attach a pergola to a brick veneer wall comes down to the same rule as solid masonry: aim for a structural pergola connection to house framing, not a hole drilled into a flat spot on the brick. Anchor spacing runs roughly 16 to 30 inches on-center — tighter for longer joist spans and heavier loads, wider for short, light ones. No single number fits every wall.

The IRC’s prescriptive fastener table (Table R507.9.1.3), which mirrors the American Wood Council’s DCA-6 deck guide, calls for half-inch lag screws or through-bolts in two staggered rows — one near the top edge, one near the bottom — with hot-dipped galvanized or stainless hardware. On brick veneer, every one of those fasteners still has to land on framing, which is why they follow the studs at 16 or 24 inches on-center. Snow and wind drive the load side of that calculation, and both vary sharply by region. The exact figure comes from the ground snow and wind load for your specific address — via the ASCE 7 Hazard Tool or your local building department — run against your span and roof pitch, not a chart pulled off a shelf. That’s the difference between an engineered connection detail and a guess that looks right until the first heavy winter.

If your wall really is solid, load-bearing masonry, the ledger can bear on it — but only with engineered masonry anchors, not the lag-into-framing method used for veneer.

That means expansion anchors or adhesive (epoxy) anchors, embedded to a depth and spacing an engineer sets against the wall’s bearing capacity, drilled into the brick body rather than the mortar joints where anchors pull loose. There is no prescriptive shortcut here the way there is for a wood band joist; solid masonry connections are engineered case by case. The upside is that a true structural wall gives you a direct, rigid connection without needing to reach framing behind it — the downside is that “true structural wall” has to be confirmed, not assumed.

Flashing goes in before the ledger — never caulked on after. As of the 2024 IRC (new section R507.9.1.5), the flashing at a ledger connection must be corrosion-resistant metal at least 0.019 inch thick, or an approved compatible material, set tight to the wall’s weather-resistive barrier and extended at least 2 inches above the top of the ledger, with a drip edge to carry water past the wall instead of into it.

Skip that step and the failure shows up slowly — a soft spot in the sheathing, a stain on the ceiling below, months after the pergola looked perfect. That’s the risk nobody photographs for the before-and-after.

On a brick veneer wall, the flashing has to work into the drainage plane behind the veneer, not just seal the seam where the ledger meets the face. Get that layering wrong and every one of those half-inch lag screws becomes a path for water straight into the framing it’s supposed to protect.

What happens if you bolt a ledger to the veneer instead of the framing behind it? The brick cracks, spalls, or pulls away — and the ledger goes with it, usually under the load it was supposed to carry: wind uplift or a heavy snow season. Veneer was never engineered to hold a bolt in shear.

The code draws the line explicitly. IRC R507.9.1.1 states that deck ledgers “shall not be supported on stone or masonry veneer,” and the American Wood Council’s DCA-6 guide repeats it in bold: no attachments to or through exterior veneers. Past that line, the only code-legal paths are reaching the framing behind the veneer, a listed veneer connector, or a freestanding build — each confirmed by an engineered detail, alongside the Dovetail Difference® joinery locking the rest of the structure together.

Insurance and inspection make the failure worse than it looks. A cracked veneer tie or a bowed brick course usually isn’t covered as routine maintenance — it reads as structural damage, and an inspector who spots an unpermitted ledger bolted straight through brick can require it removed and redone before signing off on anything else attached to that wall.

Sometimes — with an engineered standoff system. But the siding directly behind the ledger still comes off; only the courses above and beside it stay, tucked back once flashing and trim are set.

Standoffs hold the ledger off the sheathing, preserving the rain-screen gap vinyl depends on to shed water. Skip removal and bolt through vinyl instead, and structural hardware ends up riding on a material that moves a quarter-inch over a 12-foot run with temperature.

That movement is the part most DIY guides skip. Vinyl is designed to float — nailed loosely enough to expand and contract with heat and cold — so hardware bolted rigidly through it eventually works the panel, cracks the lock strip, or pulls the fastener slot oval. Standoffs transfer the load to the framing behind the siding instead of the siding itself, which is why most manufacturers’ instructions require them for anything heavier than a light fixture.

A freestanding pergola on its own footings carries its own weight, independent of the house. No ledger, no anchors, no flashing detail, no veneer risk.

The paradox is worth sitting with: the safest way to attach a pergola to a brick house is sometimes not to attach it at all.
