Most people think of beam span as a size question. It is really an engineering question — and the answer changes everything about materials, connections, and cost. A 10-foot span and a 50-foot span are not the same problem scaled up. They are fundamentally different problems.

Why Longer Spans Change Everything

Double the span and the bending stress roughly quadruples. The beam does not just need to be bigger — it needs to be fundamentally different. At 8–14 feet, standard solid timber handles the load. Past 24 feet, you are into glulam or engineered trusses. Past 36 feet, you are looking at steel-and-timber hybrids with every connection individually designed.

The Post Math

A 40-foot pavilion with a center post = two 20-foot spans.
Remove the center post = one 40-foot span.

Same footprint. Same roof. But the engineering required is not twice as much. It is several times as much. Removing a post can cost more than adding one.

A beam can be strong enough and still deflect too much — sagging visibly under load even though it is structurally safe. Longer spans amplify this. And the connections holding everything together become critical load paths, not just fasteners. If a builder quotes you per square foot without asking about your span requirements, post placement, and load conditions — that is not a quote. That is a guess.

The questions to ask any builder: “What is the longest unsupported span in my design? What material does that require — solid timber, glulam, or a hybrid? How does removing or adding a post change the engineering and the cost?”
