Across that period Texas recorded 10,731 reports of hail one inch or larger. Kansas was next with 6,276. Texas also averages 82.5 separate days each year with hail that size somewhere in the state, more than one day in five. The worst year was 2023: 1,737 reports across 105 days.

The point is not that every yard gets hit often. It is that in a hail-prone state, hail comes back. If that describes where you live, roof material deserves close attention, because the roof is the part taking the direct hit.

What does hail really do to a metal roof?

Published hail testing gives useful evidence for metal roofing panels. It does not test every patio cover, and it does not test thick structural beams the same way. That limit matters, so it is worth stating plainly up front.

The Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety uses controlled impact testing with manufactured hailstones measuring 1.5 inches and 2.0 inches. Using one repeatable method is what lets researchers compare damage between roof samples at all.

That testing shows something worth understanding: a dent and a failure are two different findings. A cosmetic dent changes how a panel looks. It does not mean the roof has stopped working. Published testing shows metal roofing usually does not fail structurally from hail — the common result is denting.

A dent in thin metal does not come back out on its own. The panel may still do its job while the surface stays visibly dimpled from the yard. This is why panel thickness and roof type matter when you compare options.

Will hail wreck a pergola cover, or can it hold up?

On an open-slat pergola, much of the hail passes between the slats. There is little solid roof area for ice to strike. On a covered pergola, hail hits the roof covering instead.

The heavy timber frame below is sized for wind and snow loads, which are far beyond the weight of a hailstone. But that is not the same as saying solid timber beams have been proven hail resistant in a lab, and we are not going to say it.

A covered pergola adds a solid roof covering, and that covering now takes the impact. The same applies to a pavilion or gazebo with a full roof.

Worth keeping straight: a timber pergola that stood through a major hurricane is evidence about wind performance, not hail testing. Hail stays mainly a roof-covering question.

What is a cosmetic dent, and why does it matter so much?

A cosmetic dent is damage to appearance. The roof can still work while the surface looks uneven — a thin panel can be marked without structural failure, permanently and visibly, while still keeping water out.

That distinction becomes important the moment you read an insurance policy. Texas has an official endorsement called HO-145, Exclusion of Cosmetic Damage to Roof Coverings Caused by Hail.

The Texas Department of Insurance says HO-145 can only be attached to a policy that receives a premium credit for an impact-resistant roof covering. So the endorsement does not apply to every policy, and homeowners should check their own rather than assume all hail dents are treated alike.

Will my insurance pay for hail dents on a patio cover?

There is no universal yes or no. It depends on the policy and how the damage is classified, so start with the documents for your own home.

One rule is clear: the Texas Department of Insurance says an insurance company will not pay for a new roof just because the old roof is worn out. Wear and storm damage are not the same thing.

Policy type matters too. A replacement cost policy pays the full cost to repair. An actual cash value policy pays less on a roof showing wear. Add the cosmetic hail endorsement above, and you have three separate variables deciding the same claim.

Do not use a neighbor’s result as proof of your own coverage. Read your policy, look at the damage, then compare the two.

Should I file a hail claim after a spring storm, or wait?

There is no single deadline that fits every homeowner, so a simpler approach works better: check the damage while you still remember the storm.

Look closely at the roof covering and photograph anything that looks new. Keep those photos with your policy information — good records make it far easier to explain what you saw. Then read the policy before deciding what the damage means, paying attention to cosmetic hail language and whether the policy uses replacement cost or actual cash value.

Remember the wear rule. An old roof does not qualify for replacement just because it is worn out; hail damage and normal wear have to be separated.

My insurer says there’s no damage but my neighbors got paid

Your neighbor’s result does not predict yours. The roofs may not have the same damage, the coverings may differ, and the policies may not use the same terms.

Start with what you can see on your own structure. Is the surface dented? Is the damage only about appearance? That distinction matters because Texas recognizes a specific cosmetic hail exclusion, and it can only attach when the policy carries the required impact-resistant roof credit.

If the disagreement continues, ask the insurer to explain the decision using your policy’s own terms. That gives you something concrete to review, which is more useful than comparing payouts from nearby homes.

What should I check on my own structure after a hailstorm?

Begin with the top, since hail reaches the roof covering before anything else.

  • On a metal roof — look for new dimples or dents across broad flat areas and any edges you can see safely. Cosmetic denting does not always mean structural failure.
  • On exposed timber — check for obvious impact marks. Do not assume a mark in wood will heal; no verified testing supports that.
  • Photograph everything before you change anything, then compare what you see against your policy.

Two cautions. Treat any published test as a guide rather than a promise for every product, because panel thickness, backing, and fastening all change the result. And avoid comparing a wood mark with a metal dent as though both had been lab tested — published testing covers roof panels, not solid timber beams.

What roof choice makes sense where hail comes every spring?

There is no single right answer, so start with what you want the structure to do.

If you want less solid material exposed to hail, an open-slat pergola leaves space between the boards for ice to pass through. The tradeoff is straightforward: an open top is not a solid roof.

If you want a covered pergola or another full patio cover, the roof material becomes the main hail question. Published metal testing shows dents can happen well before structural failure, which is a useful reference point — though it still cannot tell you how every metal roof will behave in a real storm.
