From Fading to Framed Beauty: A Railing Reborn in Redwood

Some projects are massive. Others are modest.
This one? Three small step-out porches on a beautiful home tucked into the trees.

What It Was

What It Became

But scale never changes our standard. Whether we’re timber framing a lodge or replacing a few rails, our care is constant. That’s the Western Timber Frame way—every cut, every line, every joint matters.

A Need for Something Better

The homeowner came to us with a clear goal:
The existing railing wasn’t working. It wasn’t ours, and it didn’t match their vision—or the view.

They wanted something stronger. Something better.
Something that would last—and look like it belonged.

Redwood in the Spotlight: Resilient, Radiant, Ready for Anything

We suggested redwood. Not just for its looks (though the color is stunning). Redwood is naturally durable, with a tight grain that resists shrinking and swelling. It’s also full of life—warm in tone, rich in texture, and bold enough to make a statement.

Each post, rail, and cross-brace was custom-crafted from solid redwood timber. The design echoed the home’s natural materials while adding timeless strength and elegance.

Planning in Precision: Schematics Tell the Story

Before we ever touched a board, we mapped it all out.
This was a full design-build process, including:

  • Detailed CAD drawings
  • Customized layout for three separate porches
  • Exact joinery based on client preferences and architectural style

The schematic drawings below show the difference our planning makes—and how even a simple railing can be elevated into something extraordinary.

Not Just Built—Crafted

What sets us apart isn’t just the material. It’s the method.
We don’t cut corners. We cut dovetails.

This close-up shows the completed corner detail of the custom redwood railing installed by Western Timber Frame, overlooking a forested roadside view.

Every railing was built using interlocking mortise and tenon joinery, not flimsy brackets or face screws. That’s why our projects last longer, hold stronger, and look better doing it.

And because we pre-build in-shop, the install was fast, clean, and precise.

Big or Small, Every Job Gets Big Heart

Some of our projects span thousands of square feet.
Some are just a few rails and a landing.

But our process is the same.

  • One Designer: Dedicated to your project
  • Custom Fit: Designed to your architecture
  • Massive Timber: Every piece, overbuilt
  • Personal Service: No call centers. Just real people.

When a homeowner invites us into their space, we treat that trust seriously. Whether it’s a cabin deck or a commercial resort, we show up with full commitment.

Final Look: Subtle. Strong. Beautiful.

The finished result?
Three porches, now safe, solid, and serene.
The redwood adds a natural warmth that connects the home to the surrounding pines.

It frames the view instead of fighting it.
And because it’s timber frame, it will only grow more beautiful with time.
