After Three Big Box Store Fails, One Lasting Timber Pergola

After they chose to replace their big-box store pergola, the Anderson family finally found peace of mind with a timber pergola kit that’s built to last.

Their backyard looked inviting at first glance — until the wind picked up or heavy snow began to fall. For years, they settled for big-box store pergolas: metal frames, canvas tops, and promises they’d hold up through Utah’s long winters. But after the third one collapsed under heavy snow, they’d had enough.

“The metal cross beams bent, the canvas tore. It was supposed to wick away snow and rain but just sagged and buckled,” said Mike Jenson, our Design Manager who worked with the Andersons. “They’d already replaced it twice — each time, they thought this would be the one that lasted.”

Meeting the Andersons: A Chance Encounter at the Home & Garden Show

It was at the Spring Home & Garden Show that the Andersons found what they didn’t know they were looking for. They stopped by our display to see a full-size timber pergola — built from massive, beautifully stained timbers that felt like they belonged in a mountain lodge, not a big box warehouse aisle.

They told Mike their story: how each metal-framed pergola failed them, how frustrating it was to waste money and time. More than anything, they wanted a gathering space they wouldn’t have to tear down and replace again.

“They’d been using a small metal awning to block sun and snow. They thought they wanted the same size again — a 12′ × 14′ footprint — but with real strength this time,” Mike said.

Before & After: A Backyard Reclaimed

Before: A bent metal pergola, canvas cover sagging and torn, another costly replacement that couldn’t stand up to nature’s test.

After: A handcrafted timber frame pergola in a rich Ebony stain — posts and beams solid enough to last a lifetime — ready for every snowfall, every windstorm, every holiday gathering to come.

Designing for Family, Not Just Shade

What the Andersons really wanted wasn’t just shade — they wanted a place to gather. A place sturdy enough for Utah’s heavy snows, strong winds, and the small but constant seismic shifting of the mountain valley.

Mike visited their home to see where the new pergola would go. The patio had room for the same square footage, but the difference in scale was huge: the timber frame posts, beams, and rafters are architecturally responsible and engineered to handle loads that would crush thin metal frames.

One important detail kept everything on track: Easter was coming, and the Andersons host a big family gathering every year. They asked if we could install the pergola in time — and we made sure we did.

“They told me Easter was a big deal for them. It made me so happy when they sent photos of everyone enjoying that weekend together under something they knew wouldn’t fail them next winter,” Mike shared.

The Difference You Can Feel — And Trust

Timber frame dovetail joint pressure test holding over 11,000 pounds — shows strength of pergola kit design for heavy snow and wind
A real test: our dovetail joint holds strong under more than 11,000 lbs. — the backbone of a pergola that lasts through heavy snow, strong winds, and seismic movement.

There’s a reason families like the Andersons trust a handcrafted timber pergola over another quick-fix kit. Each timber piece is milled, notched, and joined with our signature The Dovetail Difference™, a massive mortise and tenon connection system that locks the structure together — tested to hold over 11,000 pounds.

So when the next big snowfall blankets their yard, the Andersons know they’ll be safe under a pergola designed to flex with seismic motion, stand up to heavy snow loads, and resist winds up to 120 mph. No canvas tops tearing, no bent frames to drag to the curb come spring.

A Place for Generations

When we received phone photos of the Andersons’ backyard that Easter weekend, it was clear what this structure really means. It’s not just timber and joinery — it’s a gathering place for grandparents, kids, laughter, meals, quiet conversations under falling snow, and shade on a hot July afternoon.

Easter memories: families like the Gleasons love gathering under their pergola for springtime egg hunts and year-round celebrations.

We love when families share these moments with us — like pictured here. The Gleason family sent us photos of their kids hunting Easter eggs under their new pergola too. Every lasting pergola shows us why we do this. These stories remind us that when you build with true craftsmanship, you build for people, not just for a backyard.

When snow piles up, lightweight vinyl pergolas often fail — one reason the Andersons chose a timber frame pergola that stands strong all winter.

From Temporary Shade to Lasting Shelter

The Andersons’ story isn’t unique — we’ve helped many families move on from temporary “shade” that never lasts. Every time a family enjoys their new pergola, it’s a reminder of our purpose. They won’t need to replace it again.
