Redwood Pergola, Arbor, and Garden: A Cohesive Outdoor Transformation

When Redwood is used as the foundation for an outdoor design, it ties every element together—pergola, arbor, garden boxes, fencing, and gate—into one seamless vision. This project demonstrates how Redwood can elevate not just a single structure, but an entire property, creating an environment that feels refined, functional, and enduring.
Why Redwood Stands Out

Pergola With Lasting Strength

The centerpiece of this project is a 16×22 Redwood pergola, supported by 8×8 posts and finished with larger beams for strength. Designed to hold both shade and a porch swing, it’s a structure that can take on daily life with ease. The installation process, shown in two short clips, highlights how precision joinery and quality materials come together on-site.

Timber Frame Construction

After Redwood Pergola Install

Design Manager Darren Dunn demonstrates the sheer scale of this redwood timber frame pergola by placing his hand against the beam. The photograph captures the warmth and texture of handcrafted timber, emphasizing the strength of mass timber construction. It’s a reminder that every Western Timber Frame structure is not only engineered for resilience through The Dovetail Difference® joinery system, but also designed with a human touch—crafted to feel as solid and enduring as it looks.
Redwood Garden Boxes
To complement the pergola, a series of Redwood grow boxes were installed. Crafted from 6×6 posts with interlocking panels, these raised beds provide durability for planting while adding symmetry and order to the garden space. With four boxes in total, the design creates a well-structured growing area that feels as permanent as the shade above.

Arbor and Redwood Fencing
BEFORE

AFTER Redwood Arbor, Fence & Gate

At the garden entrance, a Redwood arbor frames the pathway. Its curved beams and overhead lattice provide a natural gateway, guiding visitors into the space. Flanking the arbor, a Redwood fence with clean lines and wire infill offers both privacy and openness. At its heart, a handcrafted Redwood gate completes the design, creating a welcoming threshold. It’s more than an entry—it signals transition, moving from the openness of the yard into the cultivated calm of the garden. The combination defines the garden while still connecting it visually to the pergola and surrounding yard.
Design Leadership
Projects like this move smoothly because of careful planning. Darren Dunn, Design Manager, helped guide the integration of pergola, arbor, fencing, gate, and garden boxes into a unified whole. His role ensured that each element complemented the others, rather than competing for attention.

A Unified Redwood Outdoor Space
Together, the pergola, arbor, gate, garden boxes, and fencing show how Redwood can be more than a single highlight—it can be the backbone of a complete outdoor retreat. The before-and-after transformation is striking: what began as an open, undefined yard is now an inviting and resilient living space that feels both private and welcoming.
Final Notes
Redwood continues to prove why it’s one of the most trusted timbers in outdoor architecture. Whether for pergolas, arbors, or garden frameworks, its strength and beauty unify spaces with a sense of permanence. This project demonstrates that when multiple elements are built in Redwood, the result is more than functional shade or boundaries—it’s an outdoor environment designed to last.
