A commercial timber pavilion does more than provide shade. It helps shape how a public space feels. The structure shown here is the first of two matching heavy timber shelters Western Timber Frame™ is building for the Tanterra community park in Parker, Colorado, a 3,300-home neighborhood taking shape across roughly 1,200 acres of rolling landscape. Built from Douglas Fir, the structure measures 20 feet 6 inches by 27 feet 5 inches, was engineered to Colorado-stamped structural drawings, and permitted through the Town of Parker before construction began. Most people would simply call it a pavilion, and that is perfectly understandable. By Western Timber Frame’s own terminology, however, it is a contemporary cabana because its single-slope, shed-style roof distinguishes it from the peaked or hip roofs traditionally associated with pavilions.

A single roofline has an outsized influence on how people experience a park. The single-slope roof gives the structure a clean, contemporary profile, while heavy timber posts rising from stone-veneer bases keep it grounded in natural materials. Finished in Sherwin-Williams SW 3010 Woodsmoke Gray, it feels less like an object placed in the landscape than something that belongs there. Each structure also wraps around a freestanding stone feature with a built-in sitting shelf, creating a gathering place that feels intentional rather than ornamental. That quiet relationship between architecture and nature is exactly what Tanterra’s landscape architects describe as Parkitecture—design that complements the land instead of competing with it. The project at a glance
The scope was straightforward on paper and layered in practice: produce two matching commercial timber pavilions — open-air gathering places for the central park of a new residential community. Each one shelters a group of picnic tables around a central stone feature, with grills close by, so it works as a place to gather and cook out, not just a roof over a table. The park itself is a roughly 30-acre trailhead park with a pool, play areas, a single-track bike trail, multi-purpose turf, and shade shelters woven along the trails; these two are among them.

Timber and stone, made for the site
Tanterra sits on open, rolling terrain east of Rueter-Hess Reservoir, with long views toward the foothills. Up close, the same idea plays out in the details: stone-veneer bases anchor the heavy timber posts, and the freestanding stone feature gives each pavilion a focal point that reads as part of the site rather than an add-on.
A favorite detail: the central stone feature has a framed opening cut straight through it, with a built-in sitting shelf along the bottom — a stone focal point you can perch on, not a solid wall.

The Woodsmoke Gray stain matters more than a color chip suggests. The project’s architect had originally specified a semi-transparent dark ash tone, and we matched it in a solid exterior stain so the finish would hold its color under Colorado sun and read as a settled, weathered gray rather than a fresh-cut yellow. Paired with the tan and gray fieldstone on the post bases and the feature wall, the frame lands in the same palette as the ground it stands on. The finish is applied at our shop before the timbers ship, so the pavilion arrives already wearing its final color.


What’s in the structure
Each pavilion is built around a repeated timber assembly — in old-world timber frame language, a bent: the posts, the beam they carry, and the braces that stiffen the joint, all raised together as one unit. Line up a few bents, connect them, and you have the skeleton of the shelter. Here the bents carry a single-slope roof, so the roofline lifts from one side to the other and sheds Colorado snow and rain in one clean direction.

Engineered and permitted for Colorado
Public and community structures live under more eyes than a backyard build. This one passed through an architect, the developer, and the Town of Parker’s permitting desk before a single timber was cut. We handled the structural engineering, and there is a small detail from that stretch worth keeping: the first stamped drawing set came back carrying a Utah engineer’s stamp. That would not clear a Colorado permit, so we caught it and had the drawings reissued with the correct Colorado stamp before submittal. Small thing, real consequence — a wrong stamp is the kind of paperwork snag that can stall a project for weeks.
Structurally, the frame is engineered to a 120+ mph wind standard as a baseline and can be engineered to 160+ mph where a site or code calls for it. That headroom is not marketing garnish in a place like the Front Range, where wind and snow both show up in force. It is the difference between a shelter that reads as permanent and one the town has to worry about.

A project like this rarely moves in a straight line, and this one traveled for the better part of two years — through budget reviews, a redesign, changing scope, and layers of approval that sat outside anyone’s direct control. It started as a concept and quote, went quiet, came back around with a firmed-up scope of two matching structures, and then moved in earnest once the design was approved and engineering began.

The timeline above is mostly paperwork and masonry, not framing. Because every joint is pre-cut at our shop before it ships, the timber frame itself goes up fast — the raising is measured in a day or so, not weeks. The long stretch is getting a public structure approved; the short stretch is standing it up.
Designing for Public Spaces
Is it a pavilion or a cabana?
Both names get used for open-sided timber shelters, and either is fine in casual use. Western Timber Frame draws the line by the roof: a slanted, single-slope (shed-style) roof — like the two at Tanterra — makes it a cabana, while a pavilion generally carries a peaked or hip roof. These are contemporary style cabanas, and it is fair to call them commercial pavilions too. Walls and privacy screens are a separate option; as built here, they are fully open on all sides. How large can a timber cabana or pavilion be?
These two ran 20’6″ × 27’5″ each, which is a comfortable size for a group picnic shelter. Timber frame scales well past that; the right footprint comes out of how the space will actually be used, not a catalog number. The design process right-sizes the structure to the use.
How long does a project like this take?
Plan the calendar around approvals, not construction. For a public or community structure, engineering and permitting are the long poles. Once a design is approved and a project is in production, our standard lead time runs in the range of eight to eleven weeks, and the frame itself raises in about a day because the joinery is pre-cut.
