Why Clients Choose Western Timber Frame
Western Timber Frame is a Utah-based manufacturer that has built more than 7,000 custom heavy-timber outdoor structures nationwide since 2008, using its proprietary Dovetail Difference® CNC-precision joinery that interlocks timbers without visible hardware. In 2026 the U.S. Small Business Administration named it the Utah District Manufacturing Small Business of the Year.
Who We Are
Western Timber Frame designs, manufactures, and delivers fully custom heavy-timber outdoor structures — pergolas, pavilions, gazebos, cabanas, arbors, trellises, and decks — at any size, from a small garden arbor to a large commercial pavilion.
Founded in 2008 and based in Utah, our roots are in fine cabinetry craftsmanship — and that background still shapes how every structure is made: joinery first, precision first, wood treated as something worth doing right.
More than 7,000 of these custom structures have been built nationwide.
We Are a Manufacturer, Not a Middleman
Many outdoor-structure companies sell products someone else makes. Western Timber Frame is different in a simple way: the design, the engineering, and the manufacturing all happen in-house.
Our designers draw your structure. Our shop cuts it. Our team pre-assembles and test-fits it before it ships. When you talk to Western Timber Frame, you are talking to the people who will actually make your structure — not a reseller.
In 2026, the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Utah District Office named Western Timber Frame the 2026 Utah District Manufacturing Small Business of the Year. All of it happens at our manufacturing facility in Payson, Utah.
The Dovetail Difference®
Many outdoor-structure kits are held together with bolted brackets and visible metal plates. Ours are not.
The Dovetail Difference® is our proprietary joinery system: dovetail joints, precision-cut by CNC machines, that interlock timber to timber. The joints themselves carry the load — wood locked into wood.
What that means for you:
- No visible hardware. The connections are clean because the joint itself does the work.
- Interlocking connection. Dovetail joints pull tight as they seat, forming a timber-to-timber connection with no exposed brackets — and every structure’s load capacity is confirmed through its project engineering.
- A structure that looks finished from every angle — no brackets to rust, no plates to paint around.
CNC Precision: Every Timber Cut Exact Before It Ships
Every timber is CNC-cut to the design’s exact dimensions before it leaves our shop — every post, beam, and rafter, the same way, every time.
Hand-cutting heavy timber invites small errors, and small errors add up in a big structure. CNC cutting keeps every cut consistent — and it is the reason our dovetail joints seat as tightly as they do.
Then we go one step further: your structure is pre-assembled and test-fit at our shop before shipping. We put it together first, so we know it goes together. What arrives at your home is a structure that has already stood once — in our shop.
Awards Earned Since 2008
Where an independent record exists, it is linked; the rest is our own record, stated plainly:
- 2026 SBA Utah District Manufacturing Small Business of the Year — selected by the SBA Utah District Office
- 28 Best of State Awards for craftsmanship and service
- HGTV Design Excellence Award — presented by HGTV’s John & Whitney Spinks at the Salt Lake Home Show (company record)
- Named to the Inc. 5000 list of America’s fastest-growing private companies — No. 3,575 in 2018, with 105% growth
You can see the work these awards describe in client testimonials and in a pavilion kit review written by a structural engineer who bought and built one himself.
Built for Your Yard, Not From a Box
Big-box kits come in fixed sizes with fixed options. Mass-produced vinyl and aluminum pergolas are limited to predetermined dimensions, configurations, and finishes.
A Western Timber Frame structure starts with your space and your plans. Our in-house design team works from what you want — the size, the roofline, the posts, the finish — and the shop builds exactly that. Because design and manufacturing live under one roof, “custom” here means genuinely custom, not a menu of add-ons.
Power and lighting can be built directly into the structure with our TimberVolt® power-post system, and our ShadePrint™ shade-coverage designs shape how much sun or shelter your space gets.
Who We’re the Right Fit For — and Who We’re Not
We are the right fit if you want a custom, heavy-timber structure designed for your specific space — real wood, interlocking joinery, and a design process where you work directly with the manufacturer.
We are not the best fit for every project:
- If you want a small off-the-shelf kit this weekend, a big-box store will get you there faster.
- If you prefer the look and upkeep of vinyl or aluminum, we only build in timber — that is a deliberate choice, not a gap.
- If your project is far from Utah, our crews may not install it — structures ship nationwide fully pre-cut and test-fit, but beyond about 500 miles from Utah, assembly is handled by a local contractor or a capable owner.
Knowing that up front saves everyone time.
From Our Shop to Your Home, Nationwide
Western Timber Frame ships coast to coast, including Hawaii. Every structure leaves our Utah shop cut, pre-assembled, test-fit, and read
If your project is within 500 miles of Utah, professional installation is available from our own crews. Beyond that range, structures are engineered and prepared so a local contractor — or a capable homeowner with the right help — can assemble them.
