Spread the wings of your imagination wide and let your mind soar with pictures and if you'd like, talk with a Design Consultant for more ideas. For example, yesterday a lady said she had really dreamed of having a trellis up the side of her deck to grow vines on. However, it was the only place for steps to access the upper deck. Her face lit up as her Design Consultant showed her how she could have it integrated together. It was a delight for him to experience her enthusiasm, and not only was it better than it would have been —it created a masterpiece focus point. The ShadeScape® pavilion above was another such design, the family wanted more than shade for their pool. After discussing what they desired with a Design Consultant, it turned out better than they ever dreamed. The [...]

How to Measure for an Outdoor Shade Shelter

The first step in the construction process towards a new pavilion or pergola is measuring. When you decide to where you will place your arbor, cabana, gazebo, pavilion, or pergola, you need to first measure the size of your prospective space in order to determine how much room you have for your shade shelter. A standard shade shelter has a 2 foot roof projection unless it is attached to a wall. Below are basics in measuring but rest assured your Design Consultant will make sure that your project is a success. He will help you measure and choose the right size for your yard. Also, once your initial measurements of space are taken — with a ShadeScape® kit most everything else has been measured for you. The timber beam that supports the rafters is already marked and slotted and you will not have to measure or try to [...]

It is going to be a fast and easy project that will be a redwood-sized success! Three vital things a plan should include is how much shade coverage is needed, the applicability, and traffic flow for enduring year-round usage. Placement of Your Shade Shelter The largest determining factor as to where to erect your shade shelter is the landscape and established structures. The direction it faces can [...]

Plan How Much Shade You Need In Your Yard

There are four primary classes termed to describe the attenuation of sunlight coupled with shade density: light shade, partial shade, full shade, and deep shade. A simple way to define the degree of sun-to-shade ratio is to compare it with something we are all familiar with — nature's umbrellas. Light shade is similar to a meadow with open trees along the edges providing up to 25% canopy. This is an ideal environment for vegetation that requires several hours of natural sunlight and is also called dappled shade. Partial shade, sometimes referred to as open shade, is comparative to a small, defoliated area that receives 50% canopy for at least half of the day. Full shade is 85% protective coverage as found in forests filtered and dappled with light throughout the day or as the sun tracks across the sky. Full shade is also called medium [...]

Your Pergola Plan Layout If your plan is to complete your shade shelter with all the furnishings you would find indoors, such as lounge chairs, couches, a dining table, or what not — layout just as you would for an indoor room will help in determining the best size for your yard. Larger in size areas may include an outdoor fireplace, fire pit or Chimenea for nighttime ambience or cool evenings. They may also incorporate seat walls, water features and outdoor lighting. Walls envelope and enclose a space, provide shade, shelter, security and privacy. Giving the backyard patio some covering will extend the square footage of a home. The extra outdoor room gives a relaxed family atmosphere for activities such as cooking, dining and good conversations. The intricate elegance and beauty of lattices are a popular design in outdoor shade structures. Next to a pool, over the patio or part of a garden, solid wood lattice work can define a space, give more privacy while providing wonderful additional shade. Climbing vines and vegetables can also be grown up over the lattice work. Sometimes lattices are used to display outdoor art and decorations. These heavy-duty, solid wood lattice works from Western Timber Frame™ are far superior to any of the wooden lattices found in the big box stores. They are thicker, heavier and so much [...]

Installing a ShadeScape® timber frame pavilion, pergola or gazebo is an exciting experience.  Interlocking wood-to-wood joinery without the use of nails, screws or adhesives dates back at least to the seventh century in Japan as seen in the Kigumi museum. An intriguing one to see is the water wells found near Altscherbitz, Germany — architecturally dated to have been built around 7,000 years ago. In this industrial age, we have not transitioned away from hand crafted carpentry. We are still using the so-called "lost skills" of old but are also utilizing modern technology to refine and improve the joints with The Dovetail Difference®. Every ShadeScape® pergola, pavilion, gazebo, or arbor is built with this revolutionary design. The result is a timber gazebo or pavilion kit with unmatched quality and durability wherein all the hard work is done for you making a timber [...]
