I am eager to show this beautiful "She Shade" styled ladies backyard retreat (in pictures below) with a tough timber framed pavilion; an area designed by a lady to welcome home the man she loves.  There is an innate desire in each of us for a place to find adventure, celebrate or to escape to.  As soon as we are old enough we engage in imaginative play to create places of our own. For example, my two-year-old daughter (pictured left) in her own personal hideaway, the kitchen cupboard. As kids we constructed blanket forts draping blankets over chairs, created rooms by tucking blankets into the underside of the bunk bed, stacked firewood blocks around for block castles and carved houses out of cardboard boxes. My sons went a step beyond the standard everyday kid construction:

A snowplow piled snow as high as a house on the side of a Church parking lot. My teenage son and his friends burrowed out an igloo. I don’t know which of my son’s friends brought it, but much to my shock in discovering them, they had hooked up a television inside. Adding to my dismay, my son had with him his little buddy, his devoted younger brother. Together they were all happily watching TV in the middle of a giant snowball.

Eventually tent forts have to be demolished, and snow balls will melt. It is fulfilling to have a permanent private place to get-away to. A place to relax, recharge our batteries or get creative. For some that means a sanctuary, privacy, solitude, a quiet place, romantic setting with natural light, shade, a place to read, write etc. For others that may mean entertainment, family, friends, parties, social get-togethers. Or maybe a mix of it all. Whatever setting that fills your need to loosen the bow or prune your feathers, decorating your own playroom can enhance your life, to feel more alive, like being a kid again.

The enthusiasm for private outdoor shade structures and backyard retreats has spurred new fad names such as Man Cave, Poker Palace, Club or Pub House, Barbecue Shack, Tiki Hut, Tree House and more. Then comes the feminine side, She Shed, She Shade, Tudor Cottage, Hen House, Tea House, Chick Shack, Lady Lair, Snuggery, etc. Because I like to write, some of these new craze place names can have a bit of a catchy appeal. The new names however, do not express the real trend in outdoor living; which is a more personalized theme or atmosphere. It is satisfying to construct an outdoor room that reflects an individual's interests, artistic pursuits or recreational preferences. It is a unique imaginarium sometimes with a theme (nautical, etc.) for watching movies, exercising, themes, sports area, ceramics, woodworking, pub, barbecues, art, reading and more; whatever it is for them that creates a customized, personalized outdoor living experience.

Looking back to the Victorian era, the architectural hardscape (a word yet to be invented back then) had a feminine semblance. Today architectural hardscape has a strong masculine quality while expressing the femininity through softscaping, e.g. flowers and horticultural elements.

I love the awesomeness of great masculine minds and a strength of presence yet I also appreciate tailor fitting in some of my own feminine interests and style. My family enjoys being with me in areas more decorated for "me" as I do also, in areas decorated with more of their personal tastes. That's why I really enjoyed how this homeowner enhanced her backyard landscape in this beautiful "She Shade" featured below. See how this outdoor living room progresses to unveil this woman's backyard charm that a man would love to come home to:

Pergolas, arbors, gazebos and as in this backyard case, a solid wood timber frame pavilion, can create a whole new living area in even very small, tight areas. These homeowners did their homework and contacted Western Timber Frame™. Imagination is a wonderful gift and every now and then things can turn out even more beautiful than we imagined. It is however, quite an an exciting experience to consult with a Western Timber Frame™ Design Manager where you can see your own backyard and see exactly what it would look like before your DIY timber framed shade structure is manufactured. I am in the process of getting my own 10' x 20' pergola for my own backyard and I am so excited and fascinated how visual the experience is.

On the computer screen the Design Manager can move the sun across the pavilion with a visual of the client's backyard where they can see in motion exactly where the shadows move throughout the day underneath the pavilion. They can see and determine the best situation for their outdoor living needs as illustrated in part with this before and after shot of a timber framed pergola kit exampled above.

I love the beautiful outdoor furniture she picked. The green and brown cushions are perfect. This has given me so many ideas for my own backyard retreat. Another idea would be to scour garage sales and thrift stores and refurbish some outdoor furniture and decorum recreating a style all my own. Hobby Lobby has some wonderful lanterns.

Outdoor lighting increases the hours of enjoyment with family outside. The ceiling fan is also a great addition. Just like an indoor fan, fans increase air circulation and also provide a little bug control. Outdoor fans create a downdraft that make it more difficult for bugs to fly through.

It is fun to explore other people's outdoor ideas, kind of like virtually traveling the world, it's almost as though you can enjoy it with them. Maybe not with them, but I did enjoy seeing how beautifully her backyard dream became a reality for her.

If your backyard retreat needs a more manly style, these timber framed arbors, pavilions, pergolas and gazebos can hold up heavy equipment for a man size work out gym. Use your creative imagination, insert some built-in pull up bars, grow a beard and all those guy things you like to do.
